Cortez Allen, the Steelers new starting left cornerback, will miss at least a "couple of weeks,'' according to Mike Tomlin after he had "minor" knee surgery this morning.
"We wanted him to get the surgery done now so he can begin rehabilitating immediately,'' Tomlin said in a written statement. "This surgery was a minor procedure and will have no long-term effects on his return to the field. We look forward to his rehabilitation process and having him back on the field in a couple of weeks.''
Allen, the team's fourth-round draft choice in 2011, had not practiced since Saturday because of what Tomlin first said was knee "discomfort.''
Veteran William Gay, their starting left cornerback before he signed as a free agent with Arizona last year, will move into the left cornerback spot until Allen is deemed ready.
When Gay left, the Steelers promoted Keenan Lewis as their starter last season. Lewis signed with New Orleans as a free agent and Gay returned to the Steelers after he was released by the Cardinals.
