“Spellbound” Receives Mixed Reviews

Posted on the 15 August 2011 by Eric And Sookie Lovers @EricSookieLover

As with most Eric & Sookie lovers…the critics are sharing mixed reviews of the True Blood episode 8, “Spellbound” too! Not surprisingly, some love it, and some were disappointed by the Eric & Sookie shower scene in particular.

We wanted to share some of the reviews with you to find out what you think about what these critics said!

The first review comes from EW.com, where Mandi Bierly had this to say about the shower scene…

We finally got Alan Ball’s much-anticipated ode to the shower scene that’s in book four of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, Dead to the World (listen to the audio version here WITH HEADPHONES IF YOU’RE AT WORK). Ball’s shower scene is very different, though I think the shot of Sookie sliding her hand along Eric’s naked butt (an R-rated version of what Baby did to Johnny in Dirty Dancing, if you need a visual) was a nod to Sookie commenting on Eric’s butt in the book. They stepped into the shower naked and caressed each other like both their blood was laced with ecstasy.

Sookie, still with Eric’s blood on her chin, tried to start the shower. There was no water. There was just… snow. Truth be told, I’ve never enjoyed V sex scenes. The setting is usually beautiful, but the people always sound like fools and it’s a waste of perfectly good nudity. Eric and Sookie stepped out of the shower and into the middle of the snowy woods where they saw a bed. “Why is there a bed?” Sookie asked. “Can we make love in it?” Eric said. “Like, maybe never stop,” she answered. “Why would we ever want to?” he replied. They hit the fur blankets and started having sex. Snooze. When we returned to them, it was still snowing and the annoying V sex-scene dialog kicked into high gear. In short: If they managed to fall in love, all is possible. I was happy that Eric could feel the sun on his skin in this dream, but this is when I started wishing they’d put some clothes on and do something productive. Enough with the strategically-placed blankets.

This next review comes to us, thanks to the Televisionary, who gives us a different perspective of the whole shower scene/V trip sequence! Maybe he’ll convince you to think the same way too?

This is what he said about it…

The shared vision that they experience within the shower, as the curtain becomes a figurative gateway to a snowy paradise reminded me in some respects of the blood bond gestalt experienced by Jason and Amy way back when in Season One. Whereas they encountered a sun-drenched meadow, Eric and Sookie wander into snow-dappled woods, finding a bed with fur blankets underneath a dimly lit sky, the snowflakes melting on their skin. It’s a curious juxtaposition of elements: warmth and coolness, comfort and excitement, night and day, passion and friendship. It’s perhaps the moment that Sookie gives into exactly what Adele’s spirit warned her against: she gives Eric her heart.

It’s an impossible scene that can only exist in the fragility of dreams, a magical landscape that connects their souls and their hearts, bound by blood, by lust, by love. Sookie realizes the possibility of love here, the notion that she can fall in love after Bill, or in spite of him, that she does love this “new” Eric. But Adele’s words (“it won’t last”) imbue the scene with a sense of dread as well: this is all perhaps fleeting, and Eric’s amnesia–and therefore the couple’s happiness–may be as brief as a snowflake’s life. Time may not exist here, but it marches inexorably on back in the waking world.

Now, here’s Ted Casablanca from E! Online, who hated the shower scene altogether!

Was That the Infamous Shower Scene?

Oh-kay? It wasn’t quite steamy hotness, like, at all. Plus we’re a little weirded out by the angelic snow mixed with perfectly placed sheets.

Here’s the vibe we got: Narnia slash cheesy romance novel. Something that should never ever go together. So here’s the dealio, Alan Ball, Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Sookie (Anna Paquin) together equals hot, but you don’t have to overdo it. Really. It was funny though.
