Sophisticated Outfits with Sparkle For the Holidays

Sophisticated Outfits with Sparkle For the HolidaysHoliday looks can go a few different ways, some good and some bad, very bad. You know the bad looks I am referring to. Bright as a Christmas tree and tacky as the bargain bin of leftover ornaments at the drugstore the day after the holidays are over. Sparkle, sequins and shine can be classy or they can be like a bad joke. It's all in the pieces you choose and how you put them together. In today's post take a look at these sophisticated outfits with sparkle for the holidays.

This grey knit dress from Reiss has a small amount of lurex running through the yarns to give it a matte shine. Sparkle doesn't need to be seen from space like the Great Wall of China can be. The color grey also gives this look a more understated appearance. If the dress was in a bright red it would be much more in your face. Not in a bad way, necessarily, but a bit of the sophistication would be lost.

To keep the look monochromatic, I added these suede boots from Calvin Klein that you can wear with a pair of grey opaque tights. For a finish, I used this sparkly art deco necklace from Banana Republic, grey clutch from Vince and bracelet from Stella & Dot.

Holiday dresses are often a default choice for events. They're easy and can often feel more festive. However, holiday separates, like this skirt from Banana Republic, can be more versatile because you can change up how you style it and get more use from it. To keep things sophisticated, it's important to not overdo your holiday looks. Choose one focal piece, like this skirt and wear simple pieces with it, like this basic crew neck sweater from Ann Taylor, suede booties from Same Edelman that I paired with opaque tights. The final accent pieces should be minimal, like this bib necklace from BCBG, that jazzes up the sweater, and this fun bag from B Brian Atwood. To avoid tackiness, never style a skirt like this with an equally novel top. It's just too much.

When it comes to sequins, a little goes a long way. Take, for example, this subtle sequin sweater from Ann Taylor. It's not a lot but it takes this very basic look up a notch for an evening out. Here I styled it with wide leg pants from Theory, a pair of chandelier earrings from Danielle Stevens, a pavé bracelet, ivory and black clutch from Nordstrom and, for a final touch, red strappy heels from Vince Camuto.

Check out these sequin herringbone pants from J. Crew. These type of pants don't just have to be for your office party, they can work great if you prefer a more tailored look. If you are concerned about the limited use of these pants, remember they can be changed up to create multiple looks and can be worn beyond just one season. They also don't have to be limited to holiday-wear.

In this outfit, I added my favorite BOSS Hugo Boss Bashina shirt and finished the outfit with some holiday touches. Instead of the expected red and green accents, I went with a pair of spruce green pumps and red Pashmina scarf and added this statement necklace from Stella & Dot along with a black clutch from Cole Haan.

One of the simplest ways to add a little sparkle to your outfits is through your shoes, like I am doing here with these Ted Baker sequin flats that gives some holiday cheer to this cozy, casual holiday look of a velvet pants from Boden and cashmere sweater from Theory. This look is simply finished with a metallic gold clutch from Kate Spade and stud earrings from Bauble Bar.

In a time of tacky Christmas sweaters and people who don't know that, when it comes to holiday looks, less is more, stand out with sophistication this holiday. I hope this post helps you celebrate the holidays with style.
