Hi everyone! My name is Susie, and I trick people into thinking that I am a super popular person with a fantastic sense of humor over at the Suzlyfe. Actually, Suzlyfe is a health, fitness, and lifestyle blog with a wicked sense of humor and a whole lot of heart. I am a running coach, personal trainer, social media manager, and ridiculous human being with a voracious appetite for life.

Speaking of running, October is known as “Marathon Month” because of the fact that every weekend is packed to the brim with some of the biggest races of the year. There is so much talk about how to handle taper, how to strategize your race, etc, but there is another huge question that should be on everyone’s lips: So you ran your goal race (marathon or half marathon), now what?

Take a literal and figurative savasana!

You have just spent a ridiculous amount of time running, eating, cross training, massaging, stretching, sleeping, and goodness knows whatever else-ing. So remind your family and friends of what you actually look like! Try to remember how to stay up past 9 PM or wake up after the sun has risen. Even if you are a habitual and life long runner, take a running savasana. Let your body rest and while your mind absorbs the benefits of your practice!

Also, put your credit card on ice (for other races). There will be tons of discounts available for signing up early or committing to a series of races, but trust me, you don’t even know what your schedule will be next year. That doesn’t mean that you can’t commemorate your accomplishments, though! In fact, check out my website for my 5 favorite ways to do just that (including a giveaway!).

During your “savasana,” lay off the high impact, highly strenuous activity, instead opting for restorative yoga. Trust me, you’ve got strength enough, you don’t have anything to prove! The amount of time needed to recover varies with each person, their experience and the shape their body is in, and the rigors of the race, both technically and with regards to the energies they invested into that day (did you RACE or did you just run?). Some people will go out for a shake out run the day after, but I recommend, unless you are an experienced racer, to take a few days completely off of vigorous exercise (yoga is still fine!) and then bring back something low impact, such as spin, and then finally running.

Do NOT take a savasana from the following:

Nutrition. You will likely experience a number of hunger sensations, from absolutely absence of hunger to out of control runger. Your body is trying to figure everything out! But remember, you body is also absolutely still recovering, and you need to fuel that recovery as well. Don’t go crazy with your eating, but eat how should have been doing during taper: continue to eat as if you are in training, but remember you aren’t running 5000 miles a week. Focus on high quality, nutritious foods that also satiate as you start to reset your body’s food and hunger cues.

Thinking about how freaking awesome you are.

Whether you ran a mile, 26.2 or 100, celebrate yourself and your accomplishment. Whether it was a PR or a “PW” (personal worst), whether you were first, last, or Miss “No Name” in the middle, and even if you had a disappointment, celebrate going out there and lapping everyone else on the couch. Celebrate working for what you want, working for your health, and inspiring those along your journey! You never know who saw you and said, you know what? I want to try that!

I was one of those people that you inspired. My life has never been the same.

Congratulations to all who chose a goal and went after it! I hope that you knocked it out of the park! And I do hope that you will drop by the Suzlyfe for some chat on life, running, fitness, food, and nonsense. Looking for some coaching help? I can help you there, too!

Find me on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and don’t forget to join the Wild Workout Wednesday Link Up! Have a great day!

Let’s Chat:
What do you do after you reach a monster goal?
Are you awesome? (the only acceptable answer here is yes, btw)
