SO MY STYLE: Ashley Stark, Then & Now

By Erika Brechtel @smallshopstudio

Much needed shot of creative juice…

Don’t you love how invigorating it is when you find a new source of inspiration, especially when you’ve been feeling blah about everything? That’s how I felt 5 years ago when looking through a Domino issue with Ashley Stark’s “then” apartment. And I was greeted with the same thrill when viewing this month’s Elle Decor with her “now” digs.

LIVING ROOM, NOW:

This is the photo that really does it for me. It’s the subtle, chic sophistication with a touch of glam, fur and 70′s vibe that I’m totally digging. Money shot.

THEN:

Don’t even get me started on those stools, the table and that dark luscious wall with contemporary photography.

The mirrored coffee table atop an antique rug, and layered art on the console are really speaking to me.

BEDROOM, THEN:

Honestly, lamsbwool on a 1940′s-style arm chair? Could it get any better?

SO MY STYLE: Ashley Stark, Then & Now

Oh wait, yes it can: with Lucite.

Mirrored console with this little stool would be more than enough for me, even without Osbourne & Little’s Sakura “Maiko” wallpaper.

Still luxe, but less femme and more contemporary. So so chic.

All I know is that there are too many pieces in this room that I love, that it kinda makes me mad it’s just a “dressing” room. WTH?

Python-covered bench? I mean come on, she’s killing me. Not to mention the brass pendant up top.

DINING ROOM, NOW:

I don’t remember a dining room in the Domino spread, but she got to use that console again, and her mother’s previously-gold mirror that she stripped and painted white. But the mix of the organic table, classic chairs, hide tile rug, contemporary pendant — and did you notice the silver beams? — so utterly fantastic.

LIVING ROOM #2, NOW:

I suppose when you are heiress to a high-end carpet empire you can afford to have two living rooms in Manhattan. But that’s ok, because she needed somewhere to mix her tiger-print stools with her large abstract by Sally King Benedict. And her brass palm tree!

Oh yes, and she’s cute.

What do you think of her style? For me, it’s that mix of periods and textures, but neutral, glam and totally sophisticated. When you can successfully combine mirrored, fur, tiger, python, brass, contemporary art, chrome and Lucite…you are speaking my language. Thank you Ashley Stark. I think this may be what I needed to finally finish my living room…(holding breath)…
