I actually remember the first time I heard this song. It was through a cover version released by Alien Ant Farm in 2001. In fact, I didn’t even realize it was an original MJ hit until years later. I knew many of Michael’s songs but I guess this one didn’t play on the radio as often as his other hits.
Smooth Criminal was released as a single from Michael’s seventh studio album, Bad, in 1988. The lyrics describe a woman named Annie who was attacked in her apartment by an assailant. The song was actually written as early as 1985 and a demo was made in 1986.
The single went to #7 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and to #2 on Hot R&B tracks. It also took the top 10 spot in several other countries including Belgium, Spain, Canada, France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
