Skirts You Can Style from Day to Evening

Skirts are making a huge comeback, and I'm not just talking about the classic pencil that we have seen in the stores for years now. A popular shape is the fuller a-line (get my figure flattering tips for wearing an a-line skirt here) and, with the skirt gaining momentum in popularity again over the dress, it's nice that we have some variety in skirt silhouettes. And speaking of variety, in today's post I want to touch on ways that you can style one skirt from day to evening. Typically when most of us think of evening looks we immediately consider wearing a dress, but today's post will show that the skirt can be a fine alternative for after five if you style it right.

In the outfits below, you will see one skirt styled two ways, on the left for daytime and the right for evening. Notice how with just a few tweaks these skirts can take on a whole different appearance.

Day to evening skirt look #1

This blog post was inspired by this particular skirt from Akris Punto that a client of mine purchased last week. While she had it on, both my salesperson, Carole, and I remarked to my client that, given the iridescent fabrication of the skirt (one day I will share how iridescent fabric is made), it can be worn from day to evening.

For the daytime look I styled the skirt with my favorite BOSS Hugo Boss shirt and chose daytime accessories, including nude Sole Society heels and bag from Facine and an ivory bib necklace from Stella & Dot.

For the evening look, I added a simple rib knit sweater from Reiss and accessorized for evening using this bow clutch in navy, a sparkly necklace from Banana Republic, Nadri bangle and Badgley Mischka pumps in burgundy that have just a touch of rhinestones on the heels.

The tip to taking a skirt from day to evening is to pair it with components that either dress it up or dress it down. You will see more of this in the following looks.

This next skirt is from J. Crew and reminds me very much of a skirt from Reiss that a client of mine bought in black a few months ago. What I like about it is the versatility. When my client bought her skirt she totally saw being able to dress it up and down.

In the outfit on the left, I downgraded the lacy crochet look of the skirt by pairing it with a chambray shirt. I added a pair of printed pumps from French Connection, pulled out the orange on the print in the shoes by using this orange bag from Lodis and finished the look simply with a pair of pearl drop earrings from Ann Taylor.

The evening look isn't just created with the Vince Camuto blouse I styled with this skirt. In fact, this very popular blouse, bought by many of my clients, is fantastic for daytime, just like the rib knit top in the first look is, as well. It's the accessories that take this blouse and skirt into evening. I added these strappy gold heels, a printed clutch from Hobo and a Lulu Frost necklace.

The full midi skirt is another popular style that is everywhere. It's a fabulous style for evening but can certainly be worn in the daytime if accessorized right.

On the left, I gave this Ted Baker skirt a daytime look by styling it with a blush blouse from Ted Baker, mint shoes from Ivanka Trump, blush bag from MICHAEL Kors, earrings from Kendra Scott and bangle from Stella & Dot.

For evening, I changed things up using this sleeveless bow blouse from Theory and accessorized the skirt in a dressier way using these blush statement earrings from Kate Spade, black strappy heels from Vince Camuto and ombré crystal clutch from Nordstrom.
