From June 8 to June 13, 2015, more than 10,000 dermatologists from 110 countries came together in Vancouver, British Columbia for the 23rd World Congress of Dermatology. As part of SkinCeuticals’ ongoing commitment to scientific research and innovation, the brand hosted a symposium to discuss the latest discoveries in antioxidant technology, “New Frontiers in Antioxidant Research, Advancing the Science Across the Environmental and Aging Spectrum to Maximize Clinical Outcomes,” led by speakers including Dr. Zoe Draelos, Dr. Jean Krutmann, Dr. Patricia Farris, and Dr. Jill Waibel. All are leaders in the field of dermatology and respected experts on antioxidants.

SkinCeuticals groundbreaking antioxidant researchThe highlight of the symposium was a presentation on the groundbreaking addition of topical antioxidant application to laser therapies performed in practice. Dr. Jill Waibel presented her work, showing that that fractional resurfacing can be looked at not only as a treatment, but simultaneously as a delivery tool for actives. Further research showed that when combined, laser treatments and SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic work synergistically. The laser-assisted delivery allows C E Ferulic to penetrate further into the skin and therefore work more effectively, while the antioxidant reduces patient downtime post-treatment by up to two days. These insights led to the newest frontier in laser treatments – complementary treatment with the new SkinCeuticals Age-Defying Laser + Antioxidant System, which combines the at-home Tria Age-Defying Laser with C E Ferulic and Resveratrol B E. The results, after 12 weeks of treatment, showed significant reduction in the appearance of perioral and global wrinkles, as well as significant improvement in the smoothness and evenness of skin.
SkinCeuticals groundbreaking antioxidant research
Further groundbreaking research around pollution’s damaging effects on skin was presented, including the implications of antioxidant use in preventing the free radical damage resulting from exposure to both ozone and particulate matter pollution, as well as infrared rays. Dr. Jean Krutmann’s work on pollution and skin has been called “the next sun” in terms of efforts to raise consumer awareness. New research shows that pre-treating skin with SkinCeuticals vitamin C antioxidants provides significant protection against free radicals resulting from exposure to pollution, IRA, and the associated aging effects of both, particularly in the forehead, cheek, and nasolabial folds.
These presentations were supplemented by a review of the current state of topical antioxidants, focused on both Vitamin C- and Resveratrol-based formulations. Dr. Patricia Farris shared findings that demonstrate Resveratrol not only works as an antioxidant on its own, it boosts activity in the body’s intrinsic antioxidant defenses as well. Further research, on SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E, showed that it improved skin density by almost 19%, and resulted in statistically significant improvements in skin smoothness, firmness, elasticity and radiance. Dr. Zoe Draelos showcased the results from several studies, each proving that antioxidants provide superior benefits to skin when formulated in accordance with the charter developed by SkinCeuticals’ founder, Dr. Sheldon Pinnell. The results showed C E Ferulic provided twice the protection to skin of its leading competitor. Additional research presented showed that skin treated with C E Ferulic dramatically improved in the appearance of skin smoothness, skin firmness, fine lines and skin texture after 24 weeks of use.
