From old(ish) favourites to new obsessions, here are 6 TV shows from Foxtel, Netflix and Stan to binge on these holidays.
Younger
Younger‘s foundation is built upon the notion that Liza, a 40-year-old recently divorced mother with a 15-year gap on her resume, has to lie about her age and pretend to be 26-year-old recent college graduate in order to find a job in the publishing business. Teaming with 20-something co-worker Kelsey, Liza hopes to make it a dream career–while no one discovers her secret. From the creator of Sex and the City, Younger boasts strong female characters, cool outfits, is based in the city I love (hello, New York!) … plus I’ll be honest, I’d definitely take another crack at being 26–and dating a 20-something year old–again.
The Crown
This lavish, Netflix-original drama based on the award-winning play The Audience chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) from the 1940s to modern times. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century.
Queen of the South
Drugs, executions and dirty politicians. Queen of the South tells the story of Teresa Mendoza who falls in love with a member of a successful drug cartel, hoping the love will help her rise above the hopelessness she feels in her life. When her boyfriend is murdered, she’s forced to flee Mexico to seek refuge in America (clearly Trump wasn’t in power then!) where she teams up with an unlikely person from her past to take down the leader of the drug ring that is after her.
Jane the Virgin
The daughter of a teen mum, Jane grew up determined not to repeat her mum’s mistakes. Until, at 23 and while studying to be a teacher and engaged to a handsome detective who respects her decision to wait until they’re married to have sex, Jane is artificially inseminated by mistake and ends up pregnant. To her former crush. And boss. Drama and laughter ensue. Grab your girlfriends and a cheese platter and get ready to giggle your way through seasons 1 and 2.
House of Cards
If you’re plunged into a depressed spiral now that the drama, mud-slinging and thrills of the US election is over, you’ll love the Netflix political thriller, House of Cards. An adaptation of the 1990 UK series of the same name, but with Kevin Spacey as the immoral US Representative Francis Underwood and Robin Wright as his gorgeous but equally ruthless wife Claire, this version packs and punch that will hit you right in the face. If you haven’t visited Washington lately, now’s the time to leave your morals at the door, turn on the air conditioner and settle in for some serious twists and turns.
The Mysteries of Laura
Debra Messing is Laura Diamond, a brilliant NYPD homicide detective striving to balance her day job with a chaotic home life. Her rambunctious twin boys and soon-to-be ex-husband, Jake (played by devilishly handsome Josh Lucas) who can’t seem to find the time to sign the divorce papers, make life interesting. Complications arise when Jake becomes Laura’s boss at the precinct. Rumour has it the series was cancelled at the end of the second season, but it’s still great light-hearted viewing for those looking for a little distraction.
