Let’s face it – it’s challenging, and sometimes not so budget friendly, to completely revamp our wardrobe every season. When it comes to transitioning our wardrobe to Fall style, we all probably want to make a bit of an upgrade to suit the cooler temperatures, but we don’t want to blow through our credit cards either. By making a few subtle changes to your wardrobe by incorporating some key textures, you can have a big impact on your style for the Fall season.

Here are six simple textural updates that you can make to transition to Fall in style:

1. Tweed – This texture is synonymous with Fall and Winter style. While heavy in nature, it is a very refined material and one that was made famous by the house of Chanel. Choose a classic staple item, such as a pencil skirt or fitted jacket, when working with tweed to ensure that you hit the mark.

2. Gold – A simple update to your accessories makes for a great way to economically transition to the new season. Warmer colours, such as gold and bronze, are great and go well with the deeper colours that are traditionally associated with fall (burgundy, emerald, grey). There’s no need to go oversized or heavy with jewelry just because we’ve been without all summer. Lighter pieces can be easily stacked, and mixed & matched, with great impact.

3. Cashmere – Oh cashmere, how I love thee. Let me count the ways! It’s so soft, and so delicate, but this is a material that can show it’s age quite easily. If you pull that cashmere sweater out of the closet from last Winter and it has begun to pill (tiny balls of fabric) then, it might just be time for an update. Go with a well-fitting gray turtleneck – every Parisian’s Fall staple.

4. Velvet – This material can be intimidating because it’s so easy to look like a blast from the past circa the 90s. A well-fitting velvet blazer is a great fall wardrobe update piece. The key here is the fit. Velvet adds volume (and warmth!) so ensure that you get the right fit, one that’s close to the body and hits you appropriately across the shoulders (not boxy).

5. Glasses – While not a texture, glasses do provide depth and they give your face dimension. It’s easy to forget about what we wear on our face when we change seasons. Glasses are a simple update that can have a big impact. Choosing an interesting frame can make people take notice. Sunglasses are also an easy update for Fall that are all too often forgotten. With reasonable priced spectacles from Warby Parker, it’s easy to face the transition to Fall.

6. Silk – Often associated with lighter temperatures, silk can be passed over when it comes to Fall style. On the contrary, silk camisoles provide the perfect base under warmer blazers and make for a great transition piece from Summer to Fall. When purchasing a new silk piece for your closet, try a simple silk shift dress for a sophisticated change.
