Feng Shui Principles

The Chinese term feng shui means wind-water and it’s a system that is designed to help people cultivate balance in their lives, attract positive energy, and restore harmony. The energy, called Chi, can be brought to any office, room, garden, home, or space by utilizing the principles of feng shui. The principles of feng shui are connected to the five elements: water, wood, earth, metal, and fire. Directions are very important and even though it’s a somewhat complex system, and often quite expensive to incorporate fully, there are some inexpensive ways to utilize feng shui basics in your home:

  1. Directions: Start by honing in on the directions in your home. If you want to enhance the flow of Chi in a specific area and thus boost a corresponding aspect of your life, you have to know where to focus and what each direction represents:
  • North – Career
  • East – Health and family
  • South – Fame
  • West – Creativity and children
  • Northeast – Knowledge and wisdom
  • Northwest – Spirit guides and mentors
  • Southeast – Wealth
  • Southwest – Relationships

For more luck and success in any of these areas and less stagnation, begin by removing the clutter. Old newspapers, clothes, and useless items all have to go to let fresh energy in. Fighting clutter is one of the most important rules of feng shui.

2. Rearrange the furniture:

Rearrange furniture so that you can move freely without any obstacles in your path. One of the best ways is to be able to move in a circular direction in the room.

3. Use Mirrors: If you want to turn your home into a lighter and therefore more positive area, you need some crystals and mirrors, which will reflect and bend the flow of the Chi. This provides more natural light in the rooms.

4. Add Colors:

Feng Shui Colors

Refreshing a home is easily done by using new colors and adding items in colors that are dominant for the certain area/direction:

  • North – White, black and blue
  • Northwest – White, black and silver
  • Northeast – White, green and blue
  • East – Yellow, green, brown and orange
  • South – Orange and red
  • Southwest – Yellow, beige and pink
  • Southeast – Violet, purple, burgundy and sage
  • West – White and gold

5. Liking it: The most important thing when it comes to feng shui is actually liking it and accepting the changes it brings to your home. If you feel that feng shui is good for your living space and you feel more relaxed and comfortable, then you know you’ve made the right choice for your space.
