Look, if you were a kid in the 80s and 90s, you slept and woke up with the names like Ocean, Lucasarts and Sierra Entertainment.
Sierra was famous for its graphic (point-and-click) adventures with a sense of humor.
The result were iconic games and series like Police Quest, King’s Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Quest for Glory, EcoQuest and etc. I even remember calling game writers to small fanzines just to be able to pass the “tire check” part of Police Quest I.
Sierra was absorbed into Activision back in 2008 and silence fell over those legendary games. But now, the company label is being re-activated and the first game will be a new chapter in the King’s Quest franchise.
The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom developer The Odd Gentlemen are producing the new King’s Quest game. It is a fully “reimagined” take on the original series, according to Activision. The publisher promises that The Odd Gentlemen comprises a number of fans of the King’s Quest franchise. The studio intends to capture the same combination of difficult puzzles and engaging narrative as the originals.
Ken Williams, one of the original founders of Sierra Online says: “We’re very proud of what we created all those years ago with Sierra Online, and today’s news about carrying Sierra forward as an indie-specific brand is very encouraging. We look forward to seeing Sierra’s independent spirit live on, and are especially excited to see what The Odd Gentlemen will do with King’s Quest.”
Sierra will essentially become Activision’s label for indie and mid-budget games, taking on the challenging smaller titles.
The adventure title is due out in 2015 for unspecified platforms — although the company notes it will release its software on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam.
