Hello again, FLXX readers! This month for Sideara Speaks, I’ll be introducing you to a designer I recently discovered and can’t get out of my mind. She utilizes some of my most favorite things: holographic details, transparent materials, and couture design combined with screen printed graphic details. Her name is Mary Benson.
Mary Benson has paved a prodigenic career path. By the age of 15, her clothes were already stocked in 8 different boutiques in England, Ireland, and Wales. By 17, she had opened her own pop-up shop with friends and her own e-commerce site. Soon after that she opened a boutique in Leeds featuring herself and 7 other designers called “Pieces of Eight“.
If that isn’t crazy enough, before she even went to college she was working for Alexander McQueen, and at college she worked for multiple designers including Vivienne Westwood. Now, at 22, she’s been featured in Vogue and numerous other prestigious publications.
But even more impressive than her credentials is her work. It really speaks for itself. Rarely do I so wholly agree with an aesthetic and taste.
I love everything she does, even her choices of who will model her clothes. Here I’m happy to see she is using a male, and the female model is one of my favorite artists- Arvida Bystrom.
