Who doesn’t love a free album? Last week, Shy Girls dropped his debut full-length, 4WZ, filled with experimental tracks that transcend the landscape of multiple genre boundaries. Shy Girls is Dan Vidmar’s minimalist, one-man music project based in Portland. His R&B beats debuted in 2011 with a Sex and the City EP followed by the 2013 Timeshare EP. The quiet but powerfully smooth producer has since made a name for himself after touring with HAIM, Maxwell and Little Dragon.
His dreamy, sultry tracks on 4WZ feature Tei Shi, Antwon, Rome Fortune and Junglepussy in all their blissful glory. On the “Xhampagne” track with Antwon, it’s hard not to notice a similarity to the The Weeknd — and that’s not a bad thing. His collaboration with the stunning vocals from Tei Shi on “Arrest Me” is equally a standout track. For all the hours he put into exploring new soundscapes for this project, 4WZ is the closest Vidmar has come to a fully realized album, and it’s a career-defining piece of work.
