Setup Alias on GMail For Forwarding Email Address

Posted on the 10 March 2017 by Hean Hong Leong @hongster

So, you purchased a domain (e.g. example.com) and you own an GMail account (e.g. [email protected]). Websites like namecheap.com provide free email forwarding service for domains purchased through them. I usually purchase domain name from NameCheap and use Mailgun for email forwarding.

Often it is quite useful to setup catch-all email forwarding to [email protected]. The following steps setup email alias in GMail, so that I can send & receive email as [email protected].

Step 1. Login to GMail account. In the top right, click gear icon, then “Settings”.

Step 2. CLick “Accounts and Import” tab.

Step 3. In the “Send mail as” section, click “Add another email address”.

Step 4. Enter your name and the address (e.g. [email protected]) you want to send from.

Step 5. Click “Next Step”

Step 6. Use the following SMTP credentials

  • SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 587
  • Username: (your GMail email address e.g. [email protected])
  • Password: (your GMail password)
  • Use TLS secure connection, instead of SSL.

Once you click next, you will see an error message and a link to enable “Less Secure Apps”. Click this link and enable “Less Secure Apps” in security settings.

Step 7. Google will send verification code to harrypotter@example, which eventually get forwarded to [email protected]. Click verification link in this email to complete verification process. Sometime this email ends up in spam folder, so remember to check your spam mails.

Optional step: Under “Accounts and Import” tab, select “Reply from the same address to which the message was sent”. This is quite useful for more people.
