According to Collider, AMC is seriously considering producing a Saul Goodman-centric spin off show with Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman) and Vince Gilligan on board. Now I know what you’re thinking…no, I don’t. But I know what I’M thinking and I’m thinking that this may be the best possible way to keep the Breaking Bad universe on TV without bastardizing or extending the original series. We’ve seen clients walk in and out of his office, all brimming with stories to tell and this will allow the creators to finally exploit them tell their side of the story.
Now, the studio heads have been tossing around a few ideas, but the one that interests me the most is the 30 minute comedy format. Saul is in his element when he’s not being bogged down by dramas involving cartels or drug lords. Otherwise, he just kind of disappears, as he has in the fifth season of Breaking Bad, where he’s been reduced to a shell of his former self with no quotables what-so-ever. When he’s not having fun cheating insurance companies in his two hundred dollar suit, nobody is and this is why making a half hour show about him taking on zany clients seems like the right approach to all of this.
As for the timeline, I feel that it has to take place before he meets up with Walt so they can avoid any restrictions involving working around the Breaking Bad storylines. So while that may make Walt’s cameo very unlikely, Aaron Paul can always reprise his role as Jesse Pinkman for this new show. In fact, we can have a slew of actors come back for this, such as the actor guy, Badger, Saul’s secretary, Hank Schrader (he’s a DEA agent, so I’m sure they’ve both run into each other quite a few times in the past), and Mike Ehrmantraut (YES, YES, YES). In fact, I’d love to see a Mike Ehrmantraut spin-off show where he juggles his personal relationship with his grand-daughter while taking care of business for Gus Fring…buuuuuuuuuuuut something tells me that we’ll need a more light-hearted and comedic show after the series finale of Breaking Bad to nurse our souls back to prim conditions.
