Samsung Pays Apple $1 Billion Sending 30 Trucks Full of 5 Cents Coins

By Jesusmsanchezl @JesusmSanchezl

Samsung vs AppleThis morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially,  the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that  they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.

the funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send the creators of the iPhone their billion dollars in the way they deem best.

Lee Kun-Hee

This dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives as they will need to put in long hours counting all that money, to check if it is all there and to try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept all the coins.

Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it.

You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law.

A total of 20 billion coins, delivery hope to finish this week.

Let’s see how Apple will respond to this.

You didn’t think this could be real right? but hey! you loved it :D

Apple could get an idea from the Samsung insiders the method by which the $ 1 Billion in 5 cents was counted / confirmed by Samsung. For example one method could be by weight of each truck full and empty divided by the weight of each 5cents coin. This could be a good approximation, and if Samsung has short changed, then Apple could take it up with them. Apple could once sure, deposit all the coins in the US Treasury, with their OK ofcourse. The joke will be then on Samsung.

However, this tells us in the near future, there will be much creativity in the mobile industry and we will get to see more innovative mobile technology. 1 billion dollar is equal to 20 billion nickels. Each nickel weighs 5 grams each, 100 billion grams in total. That is 100000 tons. Your link says it was delivered to Apple by 30 trucks, this means each truck carried 3333 tons each. A maxim um weight that can be carried with a 7 axle super dump truck is 26 tons. It would take about 3800 super dump trucks to carry all that weight. Which means even if Samsung somehow managed to collect every nickels on earth which would probably be far less than 1.2 billion dollars, that 30 trucks story makes no sense.

Still a ridiculous amount, but easily transported by 30 trucks (a little over 3.67 tons per truck, or about 7,340 pounds each).

What Samsung has paid is really what makes them: small pennies! Suppose that Apple sue Samsung next for insufficient payment, then the korean have to count it again at court to prove if that payment is enough or not. Finally Apple just have to pay few hundreds $ for the court, instead of millions cost of counting themselves :)

By Ahmed Hussam
posted on 29 August at 20:25

if it is true it is counted as a very good move from SAMSUNG but this obstacle can be overcome with simple ideas 1st problem is counting 1 b+ dollars in small coins it can be achieved and with a very quick way by weighting the coin bugs instead of counting them assuming that bugs are coming from bank so by weighting each bug and dividing bug total weight by single 5 cent coin weight you can get no. of coins inside one bug very easly.

By Ahmed Hussam
posted on 29 August at 20:25

2nd problem is how to get rid of this amount I doubt that any bank will accept this kind and amount of money so it can be rid off by series of deals with big retailers all over USA and exchange it with bigger notes and retailers will accept coins because it is needed as change and so apple still can use the money.

You people are idiots if you think they are going to count the coins one at a time to see if they add up. If you know what 1 nickle weighs then you simply need to weigh them to see how much money you have. Obviously you weight them in smaller bunches, but they do this at casinos all the time with the slot machine coins. The old ladies bring up their buckets, they weight them and then pay out the cash according to the weight.

From the days of the first Apple LISA in 1973 (Steve Jobs "copied" the mouse he incorporated into LISA from Stanford Reasearch)) to their latest devices...from the touch screen (developed in 1977 by Bert Stumpe of CERN Labs), multi touch gesture (developed by IBM but I don't see IBM suing Apple), voice recognition SW or IPA (acquired by Apple in 2008) , proximity sensors, accelerometers, everything on an Apple device is, in a way, copied technology.

Apple just found a way to package all these tech things into neat little packages which were sold by hype and cult factors, nothing more. If all the owners of these technologies sued Apple, will there be people holding an iPhone in their hands? Will an "iDevice" even exist?
Yeah, I thought so too.

By the way, I have an overclocked Windows Machine and a Mac OSX Snow Leopard running on a firmware hacked and modified, rusty but trusty PPC Mac Powerbook G4, so don't really hate Apple. But you will never, ever see me holding an iPhoine in my hand, that's where I draw the line, as a matter of principle.

Apple used to be an awesome company, now they suffer from "God Syndrome", much like Microsoft did years ago. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE COMPETITION MANAGES TO GET SOME FOOTHOLD IN THE MARKET. As if 600 billion big fat ones aren't enough. Plain ole' fashion greed.

What I'm trying to say is that MONOPOLY DESTROYS PROGRESS. Why should they dictate what other companies could or could not use? These technologies were not even Apple's to start with, in the first place. In the free world, who loves dictators? I don't. And I'm sure, nobody does. Simple.

People need to face facts, as much as people love to bash Apple, they've revolutionised the world, not by inventing something, but taking an idea and making it marketable. Personally, I love Apple, even though Jobs may have been a dick. They're products are easy to use. I forked out for a mac and i'm never going back to a windows computer. I've always had problems with windows, constantly crashing, being unbelievable slow etc. Apple products are low maintenance and get the job done, whether it be recording music, organizing files, banking or doing a 20 page scientific paper. Whats more, in the unlikely event of my mac ever crashing, soon as i boot it up again, the projects i was working on saved itself before it crashed - No hassle.

Wicked joke for the latest PR disaster.

To commemorate the victory of lawsuit on intellectual property rights, here’s my advice for Apple: The 1 billion-worth coins will be transformed mainly into decorative columns for display at the Apple stores, imprinted with a slogan of “uphold creativity, respect intellectual property rights” to remind us the dedication Apple has been genuinely given to her customers. The rest of the coins can be sold as souvenirs.

(footmark written on the columns: “the plan is solely sponsored by Samsung”).

Lemme get all geeky with this, Apple were awarded 1,049,393,540.00 dollars, that is 20,987,870,800.00 nickels. A nickel has a volume of 0.000009222 cubic meters, so the volume for all the nickels would be 193,554.64 cubic meters. A 40 foot container has a volume of 68 cubic meters. So Samsung would have to send 2,855 trucks of fully loaded with nickels. Unfortunately there are only 841,720,000 nickels in circulation (worth about $42,086,000), which would need 67 trucks.

Basic math proves this to be a hoax, 20 billion US nickels at 5 grams each weighs 100, 000 metric tonnes - that's 3333 tonnes per truck, nine times more than the world's largest trucks can carry. You would need ~1000 regular trucks for this to be plausible.

This from Wikipedia. "The Mint expects demand for nickels in commerce to increase from 840 million needed in Fiscal Year 2011 to 1.08 billion in 2015."

The weight of a nickel is 5 grams. So, multiply 20 billion coins by 5 grams = 100 billion grams. That converted to tonnes is 100,000 tonnes. Again from Wikipedia, I found some semi trucks can weigh up to 147k pounds or 66 tonnes (which probably includes the weight of the truck itself, but whatever). For arguments sake, let's say semi's can handle this much weight in payload. So, 100,000 tonnes divided by 66 tonnes per truck equals 1516 trucks. Sorry Samsung, I don't see you paying for that many trucks just to prove a point.

I like the product, and I like you trying to screw over Apple, but throwing numbers like this out to the public to get people on your side is a liltte much.

It's an interesting issue. When it comes down to it there is nothing new under the sun (even my phraseology!). There's a lot of stuff on the web about Remix culture - the principle of which is that anything new is in some way a mixture of the old. The way I see it, patenting and other IP protection laws, are there to enable people to make money and that's all they do. Creativity is always about copying, but if you only copy one source it's not creative. On the other hand if you try to mix an iPad with a Lawnmower it's probably meaningless.... the art is finding ideas which are just new enough, mixtures that are just surprising enough. http://vimeo.com/14912890

Basic math proves this to be a hoax, 20 billion US nickels at 5 grams each weighs 100, 000 metric tonnes - that's 3333 tonnes per truck, nine times more than the world's largest trucks can carry. You would need ~1000 regular trucks for this to be plausible.

Where the hell would Samsung get that many nickels from, anyway? The US mint only makes like one billion of them a year.

Some quick sums - 5c weighs 5g, $10 weighs 1 kg, $1Bn weighs 100,000 tonnes, a truck can carry about 25 tonne.. so that means a billion in 5c coins would take 4,000 trucks.... Or to look at it the other way - if they really did send 30 trucks that's about $7.5M in 5 cent coins.... If neither of those calculations are convincing - do you think it likely there are 20 Bn 5c coins in existence.... that is about 100 for every person in the US... Still though it's a good story....

In most countries, coins are legal tender to a certain maximal level. I'm not sure if it is also true in the US. Know that Apple can always insist that Samsung COUNTS the coins in front of them!

Most countries have a legal maximum amount of tender that can be paid in petty cash and change. A British man very recently tried the same thing with a lawyer's fees or something and got fined a further £10 000 for paying in inappropriate tender. $1bn? Sorry, unlikely. :(

Great move from Samsung, help me revenge in some way, I am just facing some iPhone4S warranty issue with DiGI, glad that this came up and I feel good. - DiGi Cust Experience Management Ms Sepalika called me this morning and from her reply DiGi is very irresponsible on handle their iPhone warranty. She offered me 2 options: 1) a rm500 rebate in my postpaid bill and I must get another 'refurbished set' replacement with DiGi. If DiGi technician found out the faulty of unit is caused by myself or found I've void warranty then DiGi in turn charging me RM1000 for the replacement of the 'refurbished unit'. 2) DiGi offered me rm500 voucher for iPhone5 [i'm facing problem with my current 4S bought only 5mths back from DiGi, now DiGi only discount me rm500 and wish me to pay another rm2000 for iPhone5, this is so absurd and ridiculous, I only need them to resolve the problem on my current 4S that's more than enough].

* this is what happened earlier, this is only served as a reference for everyone *. Byebye iPhone, no more iPhone, I'll be switching to Samsung next! (for details of what has happened please refer below).

Apple claimed that for defect iPhone handset, Apple will not go for Fix & Repair. In turn Apple will be replacing another iPhone to the phone owner. Too bad these are all bullshit, in Malaysia Apple only replacing a 'refurbished handset' but it is not a totally new phone. The service operator in Malaysia (DiGi) explained to me according to Apple the 'refurbished handset' is those problematic iPhone they recycle it back to the APAC Apple hub in SG then they will fix the problematic phones, and distributing out to the service operator as the 'replacement handset'. With such, the 'refurbished handset' is coming out of nowhere and we will not gets to know what's the actual problem with the earlier iPhone and whether the problem has really fix. My iPhone still have 7 months of warranty period and Apple is expecting me to continuously getting a 'refurbished handset' as replacement, this is not a long term solution for my iPhone. I would rather Apple allow my original iPhone to be fix and repair, because the repair will only apply on the Volume Button, but I would not know what is the real problem of the 'refurbished handset' and whether the problem has fixed or otherwise. I am paying Malaysia Ringgit 2390 (equivalent to USD800) for a faulty iPhone and subsequently I am only getting an used phone.

My new iPhone 4S is only 5 months old then the hardware failure found in the Volume Up/Down button which is affecting my iPhone4S will not trigger ringtone for incoming calls. I had my 1st replacement and the service operator gave me a 'refurbished handset' that its phone camera fails to capture a higher quality image, the images are not up to the iPhone4S standard (it is only as blur as images of iPhone4). Then on the same night I went back to the service operator and they replaced another 'refurbished handset' to me, this iPhone is having the same issue as my original iPhone which is the Volume Button has failed to function properly. The service operator replying me they can only continuously replacing 'refurbished handset' to me by following strictly to Apple's policy (I've spoke with Apple they are not aware of what has been claimed by DiGi). This means we have walked into the trap set-up by DiGi since day 1 that we've purchased an iPhone with DiGI. In future me and my friends will not be going for DiGi, we will be switching to other service providers instead. I've been told by the DiGi staff that Samsung Galaxy NOTE/S3 is having a lower hardware failure rate comparing with iPhone, so my next phone will be highly likely a Samsung but definitely not iPhone.

Americans are forever hypocrites! They chant freedom of expression on one side but remain self protective, self interest on the other side. Of course they can't stand having such a huge Asian competitor in their country because i-Phones are already getting very boring and lack of innovativeness it is a mass product you need to be brainwashed to use it. USA is a white supremacy country everyone should leave.

Even a large company (Samsung) can be childish. Let them fight harder through the appeals process. I hope Apple rises above such child play and just puts the money in the bank. They don't need to count the coins. Their bank will (I'm guessing for free). They will make some nice change on the deposit.

Nothing is better than competition! At least Apple can move out of their comfort zone and launch something better as they owned the monopoly, but now either Samsung or APPLE will benchmark technology, it’s also easy saying what is childish to do, but assume you had to take out $ 1 Billion from your pocket, you'll do similar in making a statement... Reason Samsung did that is to tell Apple “Hey Apple-people, small back pocket change for us... GOODBYE”
