Samsung Innovation Awards 2016

Samsung recently hosted the 6th annual edition of Samsung Innovation Awards at IIT-Bombay. These awards aim to encourage young innovators pursue their ideas and to recognize and reward exceptional innovations. These awards help the students to take their ideas to the next level.

Conceptualised in 2011, the Samsung Innovation Awards seek to support talented innovators. Further, the awards aim to develop indigenous products and services for fulfilling mass needs and creating sustainable solutions for the benefit of the society.

In the latest edition of the Samsung Innovation Awards, several path-breaking innovations were showcased across themes like advanced materials, applications of intelligent solutions in smart spaces/cities and assistive health technologies.

The first prize in the 2016 edition of these awards was won by the team comprising Shalaka Kulkarni, Umang Chhaparia and Mustafa Lokhandwala. Their innovation was about road quality measurement, monitoring and mapping solution.

The second prize was won by Javed Shaikh. He won this award for proposing new materials to cool electronic equipment. Third prize was won by Ritesh Saurabh and Kumar Pratik. They showcased an innovative design of smart trash cans to optimize garbage collection.

All these winners were given prizes worth INR 3.5 lakhs. These awards were presented by Dr Aloknath De, Chief Technology Officer, Samsung R&D Institute, India - Bangalore. The other finalists also received prizes of INR 40,000. Now, Samsung R&D Institute - Bangalore will be helping these award winners to further develop their innovations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Aloknath De, Chief Technology Officer, Samsung R&D Institute, India - Bangalore, said, "This platform is to encourage students to conceptualize and build innovative solutions in emerging topics of artificial intelligence, convergence, computer vision and sensor-based solutions. It is heartening to see entrepreneurial and multi-disciplinary approach adopted by young innovators. This is very much in line with Samsung India's mission to foster meaningful innovations at every level of research-to-market journey."
