The Devil May Cry series is yet another classic franchise that has gotten the HD reboot, adding to the already extensive list that includes God of War, Ico Collection, Prince of Persia, and Silent Hill.
Presentation:The DMC series has always looked good, in my opinion, back when the PS2 was considered as current-gen. The game's signature stylish looks have only been revamped with the transition to the HD format. The HD overhaul in DMC is very selective, which is unfortunate. The in game character models are impressively detailed, with great animations to boot. Environmental textures, on the other hand, look dated and stretched out. The menus in DMC 1 & 2 keep their original 4:3 format, while DMC 3's is up to date with today's standards. The pixelated pre-rendered cutscenes resemble God of War's cutscenes, they look really dated but don't hinder the overall presentation. The voice acting is the same from the original games, with the same cool soundtrack as well. The story is also exact, fans of the original have nothing new to look forward to in that department.
Core Gameplay:The DMC HD Collection contains Devil May Cry 1, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. All three games have the same fast paced action of the original games. Stylish gun and sword combat is what makes up the general core combat, with plenty of new weapons to collect as you progress through each game. Each weapon can be upgraded with the game's currency system, which brings in new combos for you to master. Combat is more fluid than ever, thanks to the more stable frame-rate, courtesy of the extra horsepower of the current gen systems. When you first boot the game up, you choose which game you want to play, you can't switch game's seamlessly, you'll have to quit the game entirely to change.
Final Thoughts:Devil May Cry HD is another great collection of HD remakes that make the transfer beautifully to current gen systems. At a only $40 bucks, this an easy purchase for fans of the original that want another chance to slay demons.
