I can tell you that if you have never been in Puglia in Salento you've actually lost a great place. This area is certainly a genuine expression of Italy where, however, there are the peculiarities of its own culture and identity. There are so many places to visit in Salento that I do not think only one journey could be enough. You'll fall in love with this land, with its perfumes, with the sun that warms the ground . At last that you will return even if you've already seen it all. If you have planned a trip in this wonderful area, here some events where to go in the first week of July. 2 and 3 July Feast of Our Lady della Grotta Carpignano SalentinoThe origins of this feast are obviously religious and they originate from the legend about an old and blind , Francesco Vincenti -really lived in 1568 - that was saved by taking refuge in a cave during a storm at the behest of his son. The man fell asleep and the Our Lady appeared him giving the instructions to found a sanctuary in the cave of a wild pre-existing Byzantine crypt. Even if you are not Catholic this festival is part of the traditions of the area and it is interesting to see the local events.

July 5 Festival of frisa Matino The frisa is a dry bread, some other regions call it frisella or friseddha . You can find below two links with the recipes that I have learnt by my relatives in South of Italy. This food was typical of the poor people and it was used when they had to move in the country because it could be preserved for two or three months. This festival is a special occasion where - beside this product - you can taste some healthy and typical foods of the Salento. So what you are waiting for? Posso dirvi che se non siete mai stati in Salento vi siete effettivamente persi un gran bel posto. Questa zona è sicuramente una espressione genuina dell’Italia dove però si affermano le peculiarità di una propria cultura ed identità. Di luoghi da vedere nel Salento ce ne sono talmente tanti che non penso vi possa bastare un viaggio e poi vi innamorerete talmente di questa terra , del suo profumo, del sole che scalda la terra che alla fine ci tornerete anche se avrete già visto tutto. Se avete programmato un viaggetto in questa area meravigliosa ecco alcuni eventi a cui potreste assistere nella prima settimana di Luglio 2 e 3 Luglio Festa di Santa Maria della Grotta. Carpignano Salentino Le origini di questa festa sono ovviamente religiose e traggono origine dalla leggenda di un uomo anziano e cieco di nome Francesco Vincenti e veramente esistito nel 1568, che si salvò rifugiandosi in una grotta durante un temporale per volere dei figli. L’uomo si addormentò e gli apparve in sogno la madonna che gli diede istruzioni di fondare un santuario in quella grotta su unq preesistente cripta di origini bizantine. Anche se non siete cattolici questa festa fa parte delle tradizioni di zona ed è interessante vedere le manifestazioni locali . 5 Luglio Sagra della frisa Matino La frisa è un pane secco, alcuni in altre regioni lo chiamano frisella o friseddha e potete trovare sotto due link con delle ricette speciali che mi hanno insegnato i miei parenti del sud. Questo cibo era tipico dei poveri e serviva quando ci si doveva trasferire in campagna perché poteva conservarsi anche per due o tre mesi. Questa sagra è un’occasione speciale dove accanto a questo prodotto potrete assaggiare dei sani e tipici cibi salentini.
