Running Lights

By Anytimeyoga @anytimeyoga

For a while — the past year or so, maybe? — I’ve been using this light to help make myself visible on night runs. Despite the negative reviews there, I’ve been reasonably happy with mine. The plastic casing is durable, the bulb and battery are long lasting, the size is convenient, and the red light keeps me visible without ruining my night vision. (Until, you know, some car headlights come along, but I can hardly blame my wearable light for that.)

That said, I’m currently looking into replacing mine, on account of –

One — I have lost the fucker. Such is the downside of the aforementioned convenient size.

Two — and this is why I’m not immediately heading out to buy the exact same light over again — it is not so very convenient to wear. The clip is fine in spring and in fall, when I’m likely to be running in a sports bra and tank top** and so the clip has a couple of layers of thicker fabrics (as straps tend to be doubled over) to grip around. However, in the summer (and I do still sometimes run in the dark in summer), I’m more likely to be wearing just a sports bra (or two) or a sports bra and spaghetti strap tank,** which doesn’t give the clip enough fabric to grip. In the winter, I get the same problem for a different reason: I’m running in long sleeves** with a higher neckline, and the clip is now not long enough to reach a double fabric layer like my bra strap.

So I’m wondering, before I go out and buy a replacement that’s workable but mediocre — Does anyone have suggestions for running lights (to be seen by cars, not really to see) that they really like?

** I mean, and pants too. Of course pants. Or capris. Because chafing. But as I’m not clipping the light to my waistband for visibility reasons, my presence or absence of running pants is less relevant in this regard.
