October 2009

The Open House Airshow at Edwards AFB is always worthwhile due to the availability of test aircraft based there.  The 2009 show was the last one I attended and gave me an opportunity to photograph the “Bone” in flight. First flown in 1974, this intended replacement for the venerable B-52 Stratofortress did not enter service until 1986.  The original B-1A program was cancelled in 1977 after four prototypes were built.  The bomber was resurrected in 1982 with a shift to a low-altitude penetrator mission.   The B-1B is expected to continue to serve into the 2030s.
