Luxury luggage brand RIMOWA celebrated the opening of their first Miami location at 115 NE 40th Street with an Art Basel event. This store marks the brands eighth free standing location in North America. “Miami is a remarkable city and we feel greatly honored that RIMOWA now also has its own store here,” says Dieter Morszeck, RIMOWA’s President& CEO.

Guests of note included Eva Longoria, Solange Knowles, Dieter Morszeck, Neville Wakefield, Karolina Kurkova, Cameron Silver, Diego Boneta, Waris Ahluwalia, Leigh Lezark of the Misshapes, Robert Verdi, Virgil Abloh, Sophie Oakley. To celebrate this occasion, RIMOWA commissioned notable artist and curator, Neville Wakefield, to create a limited edition installation of the iconic suitcase styles bearing his creative mark. Being a “massive fan of the aluminum RIMOWA luggage,” Wakefield has called the project the “perfect combination of [his] interests in curating and design.”

Following the unveiling of the cases at the brands New York store, the cases have journeyed to Brazil, where selected Brazilian artists have built upon the artistic foundations set by Wakefield. The final project with the works of Tiago Tebet, Carlos Bevilacqua, Marcos Chaves, Paulo Nazareth, Vik Muniz, Erika Verzutti, Erika Verzutti and Jac Leirner were displayed at the event. Proceeds from this project are going to educational charities in New York, Miami and Rio de Janeiro. The case created by Vik Muniz is being auctioned on Paddle 8 through December 17th to benefit, Escola do Vidigal, a school developed by the artist in Rio De Janeiro encouraging the concept of visual literacy. Vik Muniz has transformed the case into a light box, when opened reveals a trompe l’oeil interior of luggage contents.
