Rihanna is now recording her first album under the RocNation label with the ownership of her masters. What does this mean exactly?

This means that Rihanna now owns her music. Nowadays artists who signed a record deal with a label are expected to turn over the rights to their sound recordings (actual studio/live recordings) of their material.  Music labels could then license the master recordings to third parties for placement in TV or film, use in commercials, or for use in another work. For example when Tyra Banks uses Rihanna’s Shut Up & Drive song for her show. Relinquishing these “master rights” was part of how an artist secured the financial support of the label to pay for the recording and release of the record.

I’m so proud of her!!! Just to think a few years ago she came close to bankruptcy and almost getting dropped from the label. Look at the power of God!!! Collect those checks RiRi!!!
