Review: The Adventuress by Tasha Alexander Description (from cover):
'In this newest entry in the New York Times bestselling series by Tasha Alexander, Lady Emily Hargreaves travels to the south of France where an apparent suicide may be something far more sinister.
Emily and her dashing husband Colin have some to the French Riviera for what should be a joyous occasion--the engagement party of her lifelong friend Jeremy, Duke of Bainbridge, and Amity Wells, an American heiress. Amity is the picture of perfection, a distinction that endears her all-to-quickly to the gentlemen of British society, but earns her something closer to disdain--even jealousy--from the fairer sex. And though Amity's parent's wealth affords them entry into society, their crass behavior and unrestrained flair for exorbitant parties is grating.
Still, Emily can't complaint about a trip to such a beautiful locale, with the Cote d'Azur right outside the windows of the lavish hotel where the wedding party convenes. But the merrymaking is cut short with the shocking death of one of the party in an apparent suicide. Not convinced by the coroner's verdict, Emily must employ all of her investigative skills to discover the truth and avert another tragedy.'
My thoughts:
I have long read the Lady Emily mysteries and they fit right into my love of historical mysteries. When I remember starting to read historical mysteries, this was one of the series that began my love of the genre. This author does a fantastic job of weaving mystery and historical detail into her books that it makes it hard to put them down. I have read about Emily as she started investigating mysteries and have watch her blossom and become a fantastic detective. This series is one that is near and dear to my heart as it was one of the first series that opened up my love of historical mysteries. I love the author's way of writing and weaving a plot that leaves the reader wanting more. I love that the author defies conventions and creates a character that is so outspoken and different for her time period.
In this book, Emily and Colin have traveled to the French coast to celebrate Emily's childhood friend, Jeremy's engagement to an American heiress. Amity Wells seems to everyone the perfect bride for the roguish Duke of Bainbridge. Society always knew that if the Duke settled down, it would have to be with a woman so strong-willed and a rule breaker. Amity fits this description well and it seems all is well. That is, until one of the wedding party is found dead of what looks to be a suicide. Emily and Colin are immediately concerned as the death looks suspicious. Is Amity what she seems or is there something more sinister that lurks underneath the mask of a beautiful woman?
I enjoyed reading this book because it was returning to a series that I love. I will say that this book wasn't my favorite in the series, but it was nonetheless a good read. Sometimes books in a long running series have to act as a stepping stone to create and develop the characters for the later books. I feel that this book was such a book in this series. I sort of figured out the solution early on, but I wasn't spot on so it wasn't a complete disappointment in that aspect. If you love this series as much as I do, you will find that while this book isn't the usual Lady Emily mystery, it does add something to the series.
