Review: Daylong SPF 50+ Face & Body Gel

By Beautifulbuns

The brand Cetaphil has always had a place in my heart, despite being exposed to hundreds of beauty brands in my many years as a journalist. This is because it was the first brand to help bring my then-hormonal skin under control during the turbulent years of puberty, where the numerous mountainous spots and zits (on the face, body and even my jawline all the way down my neck – eeks!) were brought under control with their Gentle Skin Cleanser. Since then, I’ve had a deep-seated trust in the brand – I’ve never had to worry about having an adverse reaction to their products, and this is one to add to the pack (Daylong is a brand from the same makers of Cetaphil).

Daylong offers all-around protection with its formulations that have advanced filters that are clinically-proven to not only provide advanced ultraviolet (UV) protection but also protection from infrared radiation (IR). It helps prevent cell damage and reduces the effects of sun-induced skin aging – a problem prevalent in tropical weather climates such as Singapore.

Not-so-fun Sun Fact #1: You may be no stranger to the term “sun damage”, but do you know exactly how it affects your skin? The solar spectrum is made up of radiation of various wavelengths, and these manifest in a range of skin effects. UV rays mainly influence tanning, sunburn, skin damage and aging while IR is linked to adverse heat effects on skin (inflammation),  oxidative DNA damage and skin aging.

Sun Protection Tip #1: Be sure to apply your sunscreen products at least 20 minutes before heading into the sun/outdoors. Photoageing occurs when UVA rays penetrate deep into your skin and damage the elastic tissue fibers there, thus causing your skin to lose its elasticity and the subsequent formation of wrinkles.

Sun Protection Tip #2: For an average adult, use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of sunscreen for the face, or 30ml per application for an average adult body. In any case, sunscreen can and should be applied liberally to minimise the risk of sun damage.

Did you know? Daylong products are light, unscented, fast absorbing, non-sticky, and feature a very water-resistant formula that leaves minimal white residue. It also has ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Vitamin E that leave your skin feeling good. In addition, the range is designed without additional preservatives or perfumes, are hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and dermatologically tested – ensuring safe sun protection for even the most sensitive of skin types.

Sun Protection Trip #3: Even if it’s a cloudy day, you should be applying sunscreen. When possible, avoid being out in the sun from 11am~3pm as that is when the sun rays are the most intense. Daily use of sunscreen has been clinically proven to slow the aging process of the skin, and results in skin that is more resilient, smoother, more elastic and less wrinkled. More importantly, it significantly reduces the risk of skin cancers.

I say…

The Packaging: The short tube measures 11.5cm tall (cap inclusive) or 9.5cm (excluding the cap) and about 5cm across. It’s a pretty handy size that can fit into any bag, be it a handbag or a large beach bag. The flip-top cap opens to reveal a hole through which the product is easily dispensed. What I like about this is that the cap clicks firmly into place after closing – it’s secure enough not to come loose that easily when bumped about in a large bag holding numerous items.

The Scent: Nil – because it is fragrance free (and paraben free, oil free, and hypoallergenic).

The Texture: When I first saw the word “gel”, I was expecting a transparent gel, but it’s actually a slightly yellowish-tinged lightweight gel (that’s very slightly cream-like). It spreads across the skin very easily and smoothly, and is blended into the skin to leave a slightly brightened tinge.

The Verdict: First of all, I’d like to highlight the convenience of having a sunscreen that’s for both the face and the body -there’s no need to bring two separate products out, especially to the beach or on vacation. When applied on the skin, note that it does not give a velvety smooth finish – instead, the skin feels more hydrated, and there’s a sheen on the surface (which I deem to be part and parcel of applying a sunscreen since these are the particles/ingredients that help reflect away those harmful rays). You’ll need to pat/massage it in for a minute or so for the product to fully settle. On the face, it provides a slight brightening effect that could be akin to that of a brightening/radiance-improving makeup primer – to create a better visual, just imagine that Korean glow/dewiness. In fact, because of its non-velvety smooth texture, I find that it helps to “hold on” to makeup for a slightly longer time than usual.  The general overall feel is a lightweight, barely-there sensation, even after multiple applications, and is pretty much a decent product to use. It’s definitely something I’ll be using, both when I’m in my little red dot home, and when I’m overseas. To find out more about Daylong and sun protection tips, check out their IG Page here. Available at National Skin Centre, selected retail and hospital pharmacies.
