Michelin Standard Food at Castle Terrace Restaurant

Mrs Foodie was invited to a bloggers lunch at Castle Terrace restaurant in Edinburgh to show off their recent refurbishment. Sitting beside Danielle, formerly of Edinburgh Foody fame, Olivia from OH Taste! and Nadine from Eating Edinburgh, this was my first visit since having a birthday meal here a few years ago so I knew it was going to be a good afternoon.

Philippe Nublat, Director of Food & Beverage of Castle Terrace (plus The Kitchin & Scran and Scallie) and Holly, the restaurant’s Training and Development Manager, took time out to spend the afternoon with us and show us around.

The interior has been given a modern update, keeping the decadent golden ceiling thankfully. After a quick tour it was soon time for food with canapés served first.

Appetiser: Panna cotta of Arbroath Smokie. Castle Terrace, Edinburgh

An appetizer of astonishingly smooth Panna cotta with Arbroath smokie followed – not to be confused with a boiled egg – yet another playful course from Chef Patron, Dominic Jack.

A selection of heirloom tomatoes with basil and a black olive grissini  Served alongside the Tomato starter was a glass of Roter Veltliner from Austria 2014. Simple and tasty.  Strong tomatoes coated in basil and olive oil.

Gently poached flakes of North Sea ling and brown crab with minestrone of vegetables. Castle Terrace, Edinburgh

Next course was some gently poached flakes of North Sea ling and brown crab with minestrone of vegetables.  Served alongside this dish was a glass of Trebbiano D’Abruzzo from Italy, 2014.  Another light, summery dish. The bisque! What can I say, well a jug full and some of the in-house bread would make me very happy.

Kitchen Tour

We didn’t need to be asked twice if we would like a tour of the kitchen.  After admiring Chef Dominic Jack at work, we wandered around the kitchen checking out the chef’s table, the wine cellar and being astounded by the size of the kitchen.  It must be the most spacious one I’ve seen in a restaurant.

We were tempted back upstairs to some French & British cheeses served alongside quince, dried figs and calvados jelly.

A selection of British and French cheese served from the trolley (£7 supplement) were served with a glass of Maury Mas Mudigliza from France, 2013.

The Profiterole of Blacketyside Farm strawberries with a lime parfait was divine. Perfect Scottish strawberries with a light profiterole, parfait and just when you thought no more could be added, chantilly cream!

Tokaij wine. Castle Terrace, Edinburgh

Tokaij late harvest from Hungary, 2012 to finish.  Tokaij is a favorite of Mrs Foodie, sweet, fruity, spicy and ideal with a dessert.
