Regardless of what you think about Tomlin, his selection of coaches is pretty undistinguished. Eliminate LeBeau, Ray Horton, Keith Butler, James Daniel, John Mitchell, and Kirby Wilson who are all holdovers from Cowher era. So let’s look at the coaches Tomlin has brought in (who among them do you think is marked as a future star in the league?). I'd say overall, a pretty pedestrian group.
:steelershelmet:
Haley - OC: No pro player experience. Hired as assistant scout with the Jets in 1995. Daddy was Jets’ Director of Player Personnel at that time. Went to Chicago. Went to Dallas. Went to Arizona in 2007 for a couple years, almost beat Steelers in SB. Leveraged that into the KC job. Players hated him. Joined KC mid-year 2009. Losing record. Had turnaround season in 2010 and named coach of year for turnaround. 2011, back to losing record. Fired by team. Players hated him. Rooney gave him an interview because of his daddy when no other NFL team would look at him. Replaced Bruce Arians, a Cowher holdover.
:steelershelmet:
Jack Bicknell Jr. – OL: No pro player experience. 3 winning seasons out of 8 at Louisiana Tech. Fired in 2006 after a 3-10 record. Spent 3 years with NY Giants as Assistant OL and 1 with KC as OL coach. Had a nice college career at BC, playing for his dad. Maybe Tomlin thought he was hiring his dad.
:steelershelmet:
Randy Fichtner – QB: No pro player experience. Played DB in college. Assistant coach with Michigan, USC, UNLV, and Memphis from 1986–1987, 1988, 1989, and 1990–1993 respectively. Hired as WR coach with Steelers in 2007 and became QB coach in 2010. He’s fairly invisible – maybe that’s a good thing.
:steelershelmet:
Garrett Giemont – Conditioning: No pro playing experience. Pro coach: Los Angeles Rams 1983-92; Oakland Raiders 1995-2002; Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2003-2006. Joined Steelers in 2007. Tomlin worked with him at TB. Appears to be his main qualification. He’s certainly not helping the team avoid injuries.
:steelershelmet:
Carnell Lake – DB: We know him. Joined staff in 2011. Good immediate results, but a huge fall off this year. His fault?
:steelershelmet:
Richard Mann – WR: No pro player experience. Has coached at 8 NFL teams in 30 seasons. Tomlin was with him in TB. By all accounts, a good guy, but he has bounced around the league for three decades without advancing much. Was out of coaching since 2009. Doesn’t merit a Wiki article. Hmmm. Thought he was the twin brother of James Earl Jones, but I guess not.
:steelershelmet:
Jerry Olsavsky – D assistant: A good guy, former Steeler and Raven, but only coaching experience was 6 years at Youngstown State. He replaced Lou Spanos who was a Cowher man.
:steelershelmet:
Shaun Sarrett - Offensive Assist; No pro player experience. Coached at places like Kent State and Duke. Joined Steelers in 2012. Replaced Matt Raich who Whisenhunt took with him to Arizona. Must have interviewed well.
:steelershelmet:
Danny Smith – ST: Pittsburgh native wanted to come home. Redskin fans rejoiced when he left. Not a good sign.
