Reference Resource Mondays: Memorial and Days Involving Anime

Posted on the 25 May 2015 by Kaminomi @OrganizationASG

ComitiaSo after finally catching up to some of the anime I wanted to try out, I managed to get back behind for some by a week again. I truly suck at this whole keeping up with things with week to week, but I’m working on it. Anyways, my Spring season is light this season, as I only dropped one show (Hi Nisekoi! Bye Nisekoi!), so now I’ll finally get to do some long termish projects. Starting today, at 12PM! And hopefully some other projects will get off the ground as well. Exciting times ahead!

…Probably not. Anyways, onto the links.

“Now when I sit down to review an anime, I only write about the things in that anime I have an opinion on. If I don’t have anything to say about an anime’s art style or a particular character, why force myself to come up with something to say? It takes away from the review more than it adds to it. This way I can spend more time on the aspects of the anime I do feel are worth talking about.”

  • If you think feminism’s gonna go away, it won’t. But with that in mind, it’s clear that it’s getting harder to define, as Guy points out:

“I could list a lot of “feminist works”, and since feminism means so many different things to so many different people, there’ll be people who will disagree with every single one of them. I won’t try to answer “What is feminism?” for instance.

I mean, is Fairy Tail feminist? I think it might very well be. Is Avatar: The Last Airbender (I know it’s not an anime, I’m making a point)? I think so. Is Kyousougiga any more feminist than Uchouten Kazoku? Not by some definitions I know.”

  • This post is ALL about a sleeping girl. Anime, why you so weird again?!?:

Now it’s not the worst thing ever; I’ve seen some real shit. The art is basic and no-frills but what are we meant to expect? 3D graphics of a girl sleeping ‘next to you’? If you want that, get an Oculus Rift……or a girlfriend. The cute music (and it is very cute) slowly fades away once she’s fully asleep. Talk about immersion 😛 Would this be the ideal show for some perv who likes watching girls sleeping while secretly (or not) thinking about kissing her, or touching her other parts? Well……I’d say yeah, kind of. That in of itself is creepy.”

  • What does it mean to be a manga and/or an anime fan? Carolyn explains:

“In a positive light though, to be an anime and manga fan means that you’re just like any other fan. You’re really informed about a topic you love and so long as you practice your hobbies and share your passions in a healthy way, it’s totally cool. Of course, you’ll rarely find sports geeks and car geeks admitting that they are what they are (and they are geeks), but the truth is the truth nonetheless.”

“Originally, Japan’s manga business was set up so that the artist and the editor could work together to create manga. Even at a professional level, the artist first brings in a rough storyboard called a “name” and only finishes it up after getting advice and ideas from the editor. If you think about it that way, the chances of a complete beginner bringing in a professional level of work on their first go is extremely slim. Because they’re being judged on their completed manga, isn’t it possible that some amazing talent is being overlooked?

That’s why, in recent years, we’re seeing the appearance of awards which take this into account, and only require a “name” level of completeness!”
