Commemorating T.P O’Connor in Fleet Street EC4
Today a plaque and a bust… commemorating politician, writer, editor, publisher and all-round busy bee T.P O’Connor. Born in Athlone, Ireland in 1848, as a journalist he worked on such titles as The Pall Mall Gazette and The Daily Telegraph. Among the newspapers O'Connor founded and edited we can include The Star (1887), The Weekly Sun (1891) and The Sun (1893, not the one we can buy today). He was first President of the Board of Film Censors in 1917, and was appointed to the Privy Council by the first Labour government in 1924. He sat as an M.P from 1880 to 1929. He died in 1929 and is buried at Kensal Green.
