Plane Or Ferry – How Do You Prefer to Travel?

Brittany Ferries have recently been doing some research into the best way to travel, especially when you have children.

Personally I am not a huge fan of either!  I have travelled to France a couple of times on the ferry and once via the Channel Tunnel.  I have also travelled via plane before to various destinations.  The problem for me is the sea.  I hate looking around to see all blue and not being able to see any land.  I do try and overcome my fears though for the sake of my family and know that if we are to travel abroad and experience new countries and culture I have to bite the bullet and just get on with it!

I was really interested in reading the research into the different methods of transport.  When you have children you want it to be as stress free as possible and I think some really important points have been raised.

When travelling by plane you have to think about transport when you arrive at your destination, this could be via pre-arranged buses, taxis etc or you could hire a car.  All of this adds an extra expense onto your holiday whereas, if travelling by ferry, you can take your own car with you.

Taking your own car also means that you can take as much luggage as you can squeeze in!  When travelling by plane you are restricted by weight limits.  When taking young children this can make a huge difference!  You can pack in lots of clothes (for those inevitable accidents) and even take some of their most loved toys with them to keep them amused.  If you have a baby it also means you can take sterilisers, food, plenty of nappies and whatever other paraphernalia you need.

The other benefit of ferries over planes is the lower check in time and the fact there is so much to do on board.  You are not restricted to a tiny seat and having to make your children sit still for the entire length of the journey.  On a ferry you can go and explore the on board activities, sit together around a table for a meal or just sit and relax together as a family.

Having looked at the research that has taken place I think a ferry sounds like a much more relaxed way of travelling with young children, even with my fear of the sea!

So, if you are thinking of travelling to France over the Christmas break, or already planning your summer holidays next year, why not take a look at the info graphic below before booking that transport!
