Pitt : Pitt Archive: What's In The Box?

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
Since it's the 125th season of Pitt football this year I've decided to dive back in to the past and see some of the more memorable moments in Pitt history. One thing I found that was intriguing to me was a video from the last game at old Pitt Stadium. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua0g43lQ54Q if you skip to around the :56 mark of the video, it shows a closing ceremony for the stadium with an armored car being escorted to the field by two police cruisers, sirens on and everything. At midfield an older man peeks into a wooden box, smiles, and then closes it, putting it into the armored car and drives away. This is something that I really became interested in. The first thing that popped up in my mind was: what's in the box? If they had to put it in a armored car surrounded by two cruisers, it must have been important. I tried doing some research, but came up with nothing. Not a single hint to what's in it. I'm really wanting to find out what's in that box that's so important. A game ball? Memorabilia? A video tape? Over the next few months I'm going to be diving down deeper into this trying to find out, contacting many people along the way. And since it just so happens to be the 125th year, it might be the perfect time to find out! If anyone knows anything about it, wants to help out, or wants to tell what they think might be in it, comment below. I may turn this into an ongoing series. Hopefully the results are good!
