PhD Position at Edinburgh

By Wuthrich

The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh welcomes applications for a second PhD scholarship in Philosophy of Science related to a research project entitled “Perspectival Realism. Science, Knowledge and Truth from a Human Vantage Point”, funded by the European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grant 647272, PI: Michela Massimi).

This project aims to develop a novel view in philosophy of science called perspectival realism, via a three-pronged interdisciplinary approach, which combines the philosophy of science, with scientific practice, the history of science and the history of philosophy. Scientific perspectivism has recently attracted a great deal of attention for its ability to account for the perspectival nature of modeling, pervasive in the physical sciences, the life sciences, and the social sciences. Can scientific knowledge be perspectival, and at the same time true? Can perspectivism be made compatible with realism?

It is expected that this second PhD project will be broadly on the topic: “Perspectival Realism across the history and philosophy of science”. Any research topic or proposal that focuses on perspectivism by integrating the history of science with the philosophy of science is welcome.
