Perth’s Very Own Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe Is Here

By Foodie Cravings @foodiecravings

After much anticipation, Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe has officially opened its doors at the old Western Australian Club right in the heart of the CBD on St George's Terrace. The Perth Guylian cafe, which is the first to be opened in Australia outside of New South Wales, will be the flagship store for prospective stores in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Most people would be familiar with the trademark seashell-shaped chocolates available in most supermarkets, but few are aware of the significance behind the famous seahorse and shell design. Established in 1958 by Guy and Liliane Foubert whom combined their two names to create Guylian, Liliane modeled the seashells and marbled pattern while her husband perfected the roasted hazelnut praline recipe. It is a story of classic romance and pleasure that birthed Chocolaterie Guy-lian.

The internationally renowned chocolate brand impressed us all with its luxurious fit out of the old foyer, with marbled counter tops and plush leather armchairs bathed in warm golden lighting. The elegantly simple glass display flaunted rows upon rows of decadent desserts, all made with Guylian's signature 100% pure cocoa butter chocolate, as well as a selection of rich Belgian ice cream. The desserts were exquisitely crafted, and tasted as good as they looked. We noted that you could really taste the signature Guylian chocolate used on the brownie's frosting, which itself was soft yet very rich and dark with cocoa just as a brownie should be. This truly was a chocoholic's dream come true.

At the preview there were tables chock full (pun intended) of Guylian chocolate sea horses. Without a doubt we sampled every single flavour, from 'milk truffle', 'dark praline' and 'latte macchiato', to one simply called 'biscuit crunch' which was the favourite by only a slight margin. Each one was absolutely delectable; the deliciously light hazelnut praline centre was enveloped in a shining coating of solid chocolate that left behind a velvety mouthfeel, presumably from the 100% pure cocoa butter.

The menu offers not only Guylian chocolate desserts but you'll also find indulgent classics such as lemon meringue and waffles, and those lacking a sweet tooth will be pleased to discover a selection of savoury treats from your standard breakfast items to the more exciting Belgian baguettes selection served around the clock. Of course there is an extensive hot beverage menu, with their famous Guylian Hot Chocolate piquing my interest for next time, while also favouring tipplers with an ample wine and beer list - pleasantly surprising for a cafe.

Guylian cafe in Perth has exceeded expectations; its gorgeous fit out, hallmark location and relaxed and cosy atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for an unpretentious treat. To find out more about Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe Perth, head to http://guyliancafe.com.au/st-georges-terrace-wa.
