Persuasive Essay on Globalization

By Hanna Spence

When writing an essay on globalization there is so many points to consider. However, recently I’ve come to realize one thing (on which I’ll base my persuasive essay) – besides all good it can bring, globalization is making our world smaller, but therein lies the paradox. A closer community does not mean a more peaceful one.  Western civilization is infiltrating the third world to expand its financial muscle.  It is not a difficult phenomenon to grasp.  The rich countries want to get richer at the expense of the poorer countries.  With free trade, these economic powerhouses import low paying jobs and in return reap the profits.  These jobs create dependence on western culture, which in turn is seen as a threat to the cultures of the developing worlds.  In addition, through the importation of media, the developing world is exposed to the western life style portrayed by Hollywood movies, all of which exemplify the non-tangible principles that we in the west hold dear, such as freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, etc. These values are not held to the same importance in many parts of the developing world, especially in countries where Sharia Law is dominant.  So what happens next?  There might be elements of the population in these countries who wish for these freedoms. So we begin to see some controls loosened. For example, women are now allowed to drive, vote and receive higher education in many Muslim countries. The most fundamentalist of these citizens, however, wield much power.  Resistance to change in these countries is reflected in a radicalism occurring with increasing frequency:  terrorism.  It is the greatest threat to civilization.  It is no longer about merely preserving culture and throwing out the infidels. The goal of ISIS and other radical Islamic groups is to destroy everything that is not Islamic.  War is raging and causing the migration of a multitude of displaced persons.  This situation gives rise to human trafficking, where women and children, longing for a better life, fall prey to the empty promises of ravenous wolves. This is just a tiny fraction of the crimes wrought upon humanity by globalization.  It is a fight ongoing, with no end in sight.
