Perfect Beach-style Wavy Hair

By Blondeambition @BrookeFalvey

Last week I went to the Queensland Premiere of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 at Event Cinemas Chermside.

The movie—the third installment the Hunger Games series—picks up where the last movie finished so if you can’t remember what happened in the last one, you may want to watch it again because it pretty much starts mid-scene and left my friend Jane and I whispering madly to each other trying to work out what was going.

But in a not-quite-spoiler, I will tell you that the Mockingjay lives! Hurrah!

J.Law’s hair was fabulous … but I thought you’d prefer to see Liam Hemsworth.

The movie is great; lots of action and LOTS of vision of sexy Liam Hemsworth but I should admit that I spent most of the movie bouncing between drooling over Little Hems and lusting after J.Law’s hair, which included long wavy brunette locks and a fancy fishtail braid.

Or maybe it was the other way around. Either way, it was two lustful, envious hours.

Hair envy is something I’m quite familiar with—in the 90s, I coveted Meg Ryan’s curly, messy look but these days I’m always trying to achieve the blonde waves sported by Kate Hudson, Sienna Miller, Julianne Hough, J.Law and Blake Lively.

Why am I so desperate for wavy hair? Because I think it looks sexier than my straight bob and I’m a bit fan of hair that looks like I just rolled out of bed, even if it actually takes two hours to achieve (which it didn’t).

But mostly it’s because my hair is neither curly nor straight; it has enough of a wave to be a pain in the arse—which is why I constantly straighten it.

After trying endless curling wands, old-school curlers, sleeping with my hair twirled up in perming rods (not a comfortable but effective!) and even following some YouTube videos involving twisting your hair and then running a straightener over the twists, I finally found a method that works … a conical curling iron!

Not keen to spend $300 on the new top of the line model when chances were my super thick hair wouldn’t hold the curl, and with the encouragement of my mom who is a former Stefan’s hairdresser, I bought Stefan’s Conical Curling Iron at a third of the price.

This is the result:

Brooke beach waves

That’s right. Awesome beach-style waves—without getting sand in my bikini bottoms!

(Although I should say, my hair has NEVER looked like this after a day at the beach.)

Soft waves are perfect for summer and can easily take you from a day at the office to date night (and everything in between because I didn’t wash my hair for almost a week, I just spent 5 minutes each morning redoing any that had been squished while I slept).

how to get beach wavy hair

Here’s how to get the look:

1. Wash hair with TRESemmé Shampoo and Conditioner (I use Platinum Strength).

2. Towel dry and then blow-dry hair.

3. Straighten using a GHD hair straightener. For me, this is the best way to conquer my thick hair frizz, but if your hair dries fairly straight anyway, or at least non-frizzy, you can skip this step.

4. Using the Stefan’s Conical Curling Iron, curl selected pieces of hair to create ringlets of various sizes .

I generally hold each curl on the iron for about 5 seconds, and then remove the iron and hold the curl up with my Michael Jackson gloved hand while it cools a little, then let it drop down).

5. Check you haven’t missed any sections at the back.

Once the curls have cooled, run your hands through your hair to break up the curls and create definition (unless you want Shirley Temple ringlets).
