Paleo Friendly Soup:

The Art Of Soup On Paleo

In the old days I imagined soup to be as far away from being a Paleo friendly soup as you could possibly get. It would have cream in it; white potatoes and sometimes even sugar. All of which, disqualified it from being paleo friendly. However, once I decided to go paleo, I knew I had to figure out a way to bring soups with me for those chilly fall and winter seasons.

But since buying my first soup machine last year I have found that creating paleo friendly soupd are easier than I imagined and I have not missed the non-paleo ingredients that I thoughts were must haves in my pre-Paleo days.

My ideal Paleo friendly soup involves the following:

  • Fresh vegetables
  • Broth
  • Water
  • Seasoning
  • Garlic
  • Onions

This simple ingredient list is flexible and can be used to make an endless number of soups that will keep you on the Paleo track.

Personally, I vary the ingredients depending on what vegetables I have in at the time. For example yesterday’s soup was broccoli, courgette and carrot. But I often use just broccoli or add butternut squash, which is always a winner.

If you would normally have potato in your soup change it for either sweet potato or butternut squash as they make a delicious creamy soup.

Or if weight loss isn’t your main goal and you just want to be healthy, then you can always use coconut milk to add that creamy texture to your soup.

And then I cook it all in the soup machine and a lovely fresh soup comes out. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

I can whip up the ingredients to one of my famous soups in less than 5 minutes and then the soup machine does the rest for me. Alternatively if you don’t have a soup machine then steam the vegetables in the stock and then use a blender afterwards to puree into the smooth texture of soups.

Soup is great for getting yourself your vegetable quota in and I find that I have soup at least four times a week, prior to starting Paleo it was probably once.

Another problem with finding Paleo friendly soup is that it you don’t know what to eat it with. You have spent your lifestyle enjoying soup with fresh bread buns and now suddenly you are thinking that soup is rather boring on its own. Well sometimes I make these wonderful sweet potato buns or simply pair it with a salad.

If you want your soup to serve as a standalone meal, then adding a protein is critical. Chicken, beef or shellfish are easy and work well. The additiona of the protein turns your soup into a full fledged and hearty meal that doesn’t require a lot of side dishes.

I would also recommend that you go for the seasonal vegetables that may be on sale at the supermarket, that way living the Paleo on a budget becomes part of your lifestyle. I do this and it allows me to feed and prepare meals for the whole family at a reasonable price, without busting the budget.

Either way enjoy your Paleo friendly soup and experiment with the ingredients to create new and fresh dishes that will please everyone in your househoold!
