Posted on the 16 January 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

Best Picture
1) 12 Years A Slave
2) Gravity
3) American Hustle
4) Her
5) Captain Phillips
6) The Wolf Of Wall Street
7) Nebraska
8) Dallas Buyers Club
9) Philomena

I got 8/9. I picked Saving Mr Banks and Inside Llewyn Davis, and not Philomena.

Best Actor:
1) Chiwetel Ejiofor- 12 Years A Slave
2) Matthew McConaughey- Dallas Buyers Club
3) Bruce Dern- Nebraska
4) Christian Bale- American Hustle
5) Leonardo DiCaprio- The Wolf Of Wall Street

Big surprises. No Redford or Hanks. DiCaprio AND Bale both broke through.

Best Actress
1) Cate Blanchett- Blue Jasmine
2) Sandra Bullock- Gravity
3) Judi Dench- Philomena
4) Amy Adams- American Hustle
5) Meryl Streep- August Osage County

I thought Meryl would lose out to Amy Adams, but it turned out that Emma Thompson lost out as Saving Mr Banks got heavily shut out.

Best Supporting Actor
1) Jared Leto- Dallas Buyers Club
2) Michael Fassbender- 12 Years A Slave
3) Barkhad Abdi- Captain Phillips
4) Bradley Cooper- American Hustle
5) Jonah Hill- Wolf Of Wall Street

I had Gandolfini. Jonah Hill snuck in instead.

Best Supporting Actress
1) Lupita Nyong’o- 12 Years A Slave
2) Jennifer Lawrence- American Hustle
3) June Squibb- Nebraska
4) Julia Roberts- August Osage County
5) Sally Hawkins- Blue Jasmine

I was right in my “this might happen”. Turns out Winfrey was out, and Roberts and Hawkins were both in.

Best Director:
1) Alfonso Cuaron- Gravity
2) Steve McQueen- 12 Years A Slave
3) David O Russell- American Hustle
4) Martin Scorsese- The Wolf Of Wall Street
5) Alexander Payne- Nebraska

I thought Greengrass would miss out, and I was right. I thought Spike Jonze would get an invite, it turned out to be Alexander Payne.

Best Animated Feature:
1) Frozen
2) The Wind Rises
3) Despicable Me 2
4) The Croods
5) Ernest and Celestine

Turns out the Academy was OK with leaving off Monsters University.

BEST DOCUMENTARY:
1) The Act Of Killing
2) 20 Feet From Stardom
3) Cutie and the Boxer
4) Dirty Wars
5) The Square

I only got two of these right. I’m not surprised that Blackfish and Tim’s Vermeer didn’t make the cut, but I am surprised the well reviewed Stories We Tell missed the cut.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
1) The Hunt
2) The Broken Circle Breakdown
3) The Great Beauty
4) Omar
5) The Missing Picture

I went 4/5 here. I picked The Grandmaster, but they went with The Missing Picture.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
1) Spike Jonze- Her
2) Eric Singer and David O Russell- American Hustle
3) Bob Nelson- Nebraska
4) Woody Allen- Blue Jasmine
5) Craig Borten- Dallas Buyers Club

I went 4/5 here. The Coens didn’t get nominated. Inside Llewyn Davis was largely shut out.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
1) John Ridley- 12 Years A Slave
4) Terrence Winter- The Wolf Of Wall Street
5) Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope- Philomena
2) Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke- Before Midnight
3) Billy Ray- Captain Phillips

I got all five! WOOOOOO!

ORIGINAL SONG
1) Let It Go from Frozen
2) The Moon Song from Her
3) Ordinary Love from Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom
4) Alone Yet Not Alone from Alone Yet Not Alone
5) Happy from Despicable Me 2

I only got 2/5. Then again, I don’t think ANYONE saw Alone Yet Not Alone coming.

BEST EDITING
1) Gravity
2) 12 Years A Slave
3) Captain Phillips
4) American Hustle
5) Dallas Buyers Club

I had Gatsby and Hobbit, they had Dallas and Phillips. 3/5.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
1) Gravity
2) The Grandmaster
3) Inside Llewyn Davis
4) Prisoners
5) Nebraska

Despite not being nominated for Best Foreign Film, The Grandmaster manages a cinematography nod. Also, Prisoners finally gets some love. I went 3/5.

1) Gravity
2) 12 Years A Slave
3) American Hustle
4) Her
5) The Great Gatsby

I went 3/5.

5) Lone Survivor

I went 4/5 here.

COSTUME DESIGN
1) American Hustle
2) 12 Years A Slave
3) The Great Gatsby
4) The Grandmaster
5) The Invisible Woman

I went 3/5 here. Grandmaster gets more love. I’m surprised Oz wasn’t nominated here.

ORIGINAL SCORE
1) Gravity
2) Philomena
3) Saving Mr Banks
4) Her
5) The Book Thief

I’m surprised 12 Years A Slave got shut out here. I went 2/5.

BEST MAKEUP
1) The Lone Ranger
2) Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
3) Dallas Buyers Club

I had Bad Grandpa on my shortlist until last night, when I made my final predictions. I allowed myself to be convinced the Oscars were too snooty to nominate a Jackass film. 1/3.

VISUAL EFFECTS
1) Gravity
2) The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
3) The Lone Ranger
4) Iron Man 3
5) Star Trek Into Darkness

Ummm… The Lone Ranger over Pacific Rim? Da fuck? Of all the nomination omissions, Pacific Rim seems to be the most glaring.
