Origami

Origami is a paper folding art that originated in Japan. ‘Ori’ means folding and ‘kami’ or ‘gami’ means paper. The exact history of origami is unknown as paper degenerates over time, leaving no substantial information. However, the art itself has been preserved and passed down from generation to generation.

History of origami

According to textbooks, paper was first invented in China in 105 A.D. by Cai Lun. Later, there was other evidence that suggested the invention of paper dating back to earlier centuries. Although it can be assumed that the presence of paper would include it being folded, there was no exact evidence of this. If there had been, paper folding could have been dated back to this time. It is believed that Buddhist monks introduced paper to Japan in the 6th century. Soon after, folding of paper became an art form called origami.

Back in the day, butterfly shaped folded paper was used to cover sake bottles during wedding ceremonies. The butterfly designs are known as ‘Ocho’ or ‘Mecho’. The present day diagrams of origami are based on the writings of San Randlett and Akira Yoshizana in 1950. It is believed that the art of paper folding was then introduced in Spain after the 8th century, finding its way to Europe from Asia through the Silk Route.

Storage of origami paper

Divided files- Origami paper can be placed and stored in divided files as it is convenient to organize. The many compartments of the file provide proper care for the origami paper.

Zip lock bags- If the initial storage bag tears, use of a zip lock bag is best. They are convenient for storage as they are available in a wide range of sizes. Also, the contents of the bag can be seen easily as it is transparent.
