On Personal Style: Part 1

Posted on the 26 April 2014 by Holliegalloway @holliegalloway

I’ve been thinking about writing a little bit about personal style lately, but once I got started I realised I could ramble on all day, so I’m going to break the subject up into a few posts. Here’s the first part.

One thing that always fascinates me is different people’s interpretations of style and what they deem to be ‘dressed up’. The number one thing I love the most about fashion is how everyone interprets it differently. We all make our own choices, different things appeal to us and we have different levels of ‘dressiness’.

I rather like to look back and reflect on how my own style has changed and how i’ve grown from a total tomboy in my early teens to warranting every day off as an excuse to be dressed up. There was once a time where I didn’t enjoy dressing up at all, I remember it vividly, just starting to go on nights out, I’d wear a hoody and sneakers with a little skater skirt, that was my staple night out look. Soon I started to wear dresses and be girlier, eventually I even came around to heels. Actually this all happened within about a year, this was when I really started to open up to fashion and realize the possibilities and how your sartorial choices can influence your mood, your attitude, the way you’re received, everything. While I don’t believe people should be judged entirely on the way they look, it would be naive to believe people don’t judge people that way, we all make first impressions and your style says a lot about you, whether you want it to or not.

Confidence is a big part of personal style. I believe you have to feel confident in what you wear, if you feel good in the way you look then you will radiate confidence. On many occasions I have purchased items that i’ve just loved the idea of at the time but then I’ve got them home and realised I’m not quite there yet, not quite ready to wear them. The time always comes, I just didn’t always wear things right away. It was somewhat of a fear, thinking that something was too fancy or too bold for regular life and it would take a while for me to be ready to wear it and find the confidence.

These days I never find things that I’m not confident enough to wear. These days things can’t be fancy or bold enough for me, in fact I see most things as quite boring, which is really annoying. The things that really appeal to me are the most grand and elaborate pieces, the least wearable and the ones that I don’t think I’d ever find a moment for in my generally uneventful life. It’s a catch 22 really, I can’t be fancy enough, but if I could I don’t have anywhere to wear it anyway… But I do what I can within my means, that’s for sure!
