Michaela Farm: Oldenburg, Indiana

Michaela Farm: Oldenburg, Indiana

It’s not every day that you will find a farm run by sisters (and Associates and many volunteers) from a convent, but that is exactly what you will find at Michaela Farm in Oldenburg, Indiana.

Oh, and just so we are clear, I don’t mean some little vegetable patch with a few rows of corn. I mean a 300 acre working farm!

Imagine, if you will a 300 acre farm. Rolling fields, woodland, prairie, and gardens from flowers to vegetables.

Don’t forget to add in a dedication to natural farming practices and a genuine commitment to protecting and working with the environment.

Yes, Michaela Farm in lovely Ripley County is absolutely incredible–and we haven’t even touched upon the barn yet!

Once upon a time, Michaela Farm was a dairy farm. Farm production decreased through the 1970′s and eventually halted in the late 1980′s. Until Sister Michaela Lindemann, that is!

In the early 1990′s, this Ripley County farm put into motion a revitalization plan for the farm.

As I’m sure you have guessed, Michaela Farm was named for Sister Michaela as first farm manager.

Today, the farm staff is part of a local agricultural co-op. Visitors to Michaela Farms can find fresh eggs, herbs, and even Beefalo, a cross between buffalo (American bison) and cattle.

We did such a dash through the barn, we didn’t even get a chance to check out the herb and flower gardens.

Absolutely go check out this amazing Indiana town farm–and pick up something fresh from the farm while you’re there!
