Old New Year in Russia

By Mendeleyeev

Старый Новый год! Well, the old new year has come; 13-14 January signals the beginning of the New Year according to the old Julian calendar.

Old New Year in Russia

Over half of the population in Russia still celebrates the Old New Year, turning this into it an annual two-weeks-after party, beginning on New Year’s Eve and then culminating two weeks later on 14 January.

While the old new year remains popular, it is usually not the same ruckus as observed on 1 January but even so, for Russians the holiday serves as one final excuse to throw a party before returning to work after the holidays.
