Today we’re craving something old, along with new blue and borrowed. Luckily, our antique engagement rings always satisfy. Today we’re eying our Old European cut diamonds in particular. The Old European cut is the predecessor of the modern round brilliant. It has the same round shape and even the same facet arrangements as the round brilliant cut, but it only has 58 facets, where a round brilliant has 68. The Old European cut first came to prominence in the early 18th century and was an improvement upon the old mine cut. These antique diamonds are marked by their hand crafted facets – a true work of art and skill by the cutter who perfectly proportioned the cut to preserve as much as 80% of the original rough stone – today most diamonds are precisely cut by machines. Old European diamonds are deeper than modern round brilliants, and the stones’ craftsmanship shines. Some of our favorite antique engagement rings feature Old European cut diamonds, and we’re happy to show them off!
