Winter is arguably the unhealthiest time of the year. You’ve probably already found yourself with a sore throat and sniffling at times, no matter how hard you try to stay away from anyone clutching a tissue and who has a suspiciously red nose. The only thing that’s worse than waking up to dark skies and hammering rain is waking up to dark skies and hammering rain with a horrible headache and the beginnings of winter flu. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy this winter.

Get Plenty Of Sleep

If you’re sleep deprived, you’re much more prone to infection, whereas if you get your solid seven hours of sleep every night then you’ll find that you heal a lot more quickly if you’re sick. It’s easier to stay asleep in the mornings when the sun rises later, so make the most of it and try to ensure that you hibernate over the winter like a grizzly bear. It will also improve your mood considerably.

Wash Your Hands

Keep washing your hands every time you get home from somewhere, and when you get to work, especially if you travel there on public transport. Make sure that you use hot water and plenty of soap and that you scrub your fingernails carefully. You should also make sure that you don’t touch your face without washing them. You should also wipe off your phone with antibacterial wipes every so often – you tend to touch that with dirty hands while you’re out and then wash your hands without thinking about your phone! Also, stop using it in public bathroom stalls. (You’re either aghast at the idea of doing that at all, or aghast at the idea of stopping!)

Take A Vitamin C Supplement

Even if you don’t enjoy taking pills, supplements are great to keep your health in tiptop shape over the coming months. Vitamin C will help you stave off colds, while Vitamin D will help to make up for the lack of sunlight you experience over the winter. You could also make taking echinacea part of your daily routine as it helps to boost your immune system. Zinc is also a great supplement that will boss your immune system and fight off colds. Stay Off Work When You’re Sick

If you get sick pay, try to stay at home when you’re sick. There may be people with compromised immune systems around you at your office or on public transport, and what you think of as a mild stomach virus or slight flu could affect them very badly. If you stay off, keep yourself warm, drink plenty of fluids, and get some extra sleep, then you’ll heal faster and manage to get back to work more quickly. Remember that it isn’t a badge of honor to struggle into your office if you feel awful!
