Fashionistas across the globe recently turned their attention towards the mecca of style, the city where all black everything reigns supreme, and the rules are: there are no rules. New York Fashion Week always seem to creep up on me, and this year was no different. Still, I was able to enjoy certain aspects up close and some from afar. Here are my top NYFW highlights.
1. Disney StyleI kicked off NYFW with a complimentary viewing of Disney's Aladdin on Broadway. The phenomenal performance, lead by Courtney Reed and Adam Jacobs, took my husband and I on a magical journey, which showcased 2.1 million Swarovski crystals on over 337 vibrant handmade costumes. After the show, we sat down with Reed (who plays Princess Jasmine) as well as some of the cast, costume, hair, and makeup team for a little Q&A. Read more about the night on Disney Style.
2. Tommy PierImagine my delight, when on a regular Thursday night walkies with Joey Buttons I discovered Tommy Hilfiger transforming my neighborhood pier into carnival. Reminiscent of the Santa Monica pier, Hilfiger's fashion show boasted arcade-style games, sinful food stands, and even a ferris wheel. Hilfiger is doing his best to stay relevant by partnering with A-list model, Gigi Hadid, and he definitely pulled out all the stops. As for the retail? Only time will tell if this extravagant fashion show and Hadid's star power have done the trick.
3. Models & MagnumWhoever said, "Don't feed the models," was seriously mistaken! Backstage at Rebecca Minkoff's show in SoHo, models devoured the Belgian chocolate dipped ice cream bars during hair and makeup. Magnum created a custom bar specifically inspired by Minkoff. Appropriately named "The Stylist", it featured silky vanilla bean ice cream dipped in dark Belgian chocolate and styled with midnight black pearls, Greek yogurt buttons, blush blossom curls, a hint of Hawaiian black lava sea salt, and white chocolate drizzle.
4. Models Like UsSpeaking of models, several runways at NYFW 2016 we're adorned with a new look- and we're not talking about the fashion pieces. Christian Siriano, J. Crew, and Tracey Reese were just a few designers of many who chose to use women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnicities. Stick-thin and super-tall has been the status quo, but fashionistas from around the country have been expressing their interest in increased body diversity in the industry. It's refreshing to see top designers take action and give the people what they want.
5. A Night With Coterie X PrymaOn Thursday night, we attended a viewing party hosted at the World of McIntosh townhouse in SoHo. Sipping on prosecco and herbed lemonade cocktails, we previewed the top 60 collections showing at Coterie 's premier fashion trade shows. Brands included Alexis Bittar, Jill Stuart, and Zadig & Voltaire. Our favorite display, however, was that of Italian blogger turned designer Chiara Ferragni, who was also in attendance. Each display was showcased around the 3-story townhouse that boasted gorgeous high ceilings, and indoor pool, an a small rooftop terrace.
