Novels Or Short Stories?

By Eriktiger @eriktiger

Last night I had a pretty odd dream. There was a house in the middle of a huge forest and going around the roof of that house, like a crown, was an old fashioned carousel. Weird huh? Well the writer in me got excited, so I started working out a story. Not sure where I am going with it, but ya know, something will work itself out.

Novels or Short Stories?

Carousel’s can be magical and exciting for people of all ages, but they can also be scary. Something Wicked This Way Comes, flashes to mind.

Will it be a novel or a short story? Probably a short story, but then what to do with it?

Submit it to an anthology or magazine perhaps. I’ve been doing a lot of submitting lately, with some degree of success. I’ve had a handful of stories accepted here and there. Trouble with putting me work out there to publishers and competitions is I can’t self-publish them right away. The downside of that is it doesn’t look like I am writing anything new for months at a time.

I don’t have time to write stories to self-publish, submit to anthologies, and write novels. And blogging. Gotta keep my day job and hold on to my family. So what should I do? Where is the balance? How does one decide on which path to take, when all roads seem enticing and rewarding? It seems like putting out novels is the way to go, but I gotta admit I love seeing my work in anthologies.

It’s a long, long road to finding one’s way. At least the journey is fun!
