Notes of Space Dandy Season 2 Episode 13

… the man who the series is named after?! Who saw that coming?!

Last time on Space Dandy Season 2, Dandy was on trial, being accused of murder, to which he was eventually acquitted.

Summary of Space Dandy Season 2 Episode 13

  • Banking off of the last episode, Dandy finally gets abducted by the Gogol Empire after the trial. It’s then revealed that Dandy possesses a high amount of Pyonium, an element that has unimaginable powers, and the Gogol Empire plans to use it to charge a massive weapon to control the universe. Meow, QT, Honey, and Scarlet then decide to take the Aloha Oe to rescue Dandy, but it gets destroyed in the process due to the surprise attack that the Jaicro Empire is launching. Before making it to Dandy, Dr. Gel’s right hand man, Bea, is revealed to be a traitor who wants to use Dandy to control the universe for himself, and he then shoots Dr. Gel. However, he is promptly killed by a wounded Dr. Gel, who then tells Dandy to take his ship and stop the weapon from firing. He is too late, however, and the entire universe disintegrates. Dandy then meets the narrator, who is revealed to be the universe’s god, and offers Dandy the job of being God of the new universe. Dandy then realizes that being a god wouldn’t allow him to visit Boobies, so he rejects the offer, and the universe is reborn without a god.

My Take

  • So, Space Dandy is done, baby… I don’t know quite how to feel about this. On the one hand, it’s nice to finally get some closure (because of the surprising continuity!), but on the other hand, it just seems like it went by so fast. So, what did I think of the ending?

It took 26 episodes, but a plot has finally developed

  • I’m not going to beat around the bush; this finale was simply amazing. Dandy gets kidnapped, then his crew (along with Honey and Scarlett, who have apparently become main characters now) plan to rescue him from the clutches of the Gogol Empire under the shroud of a sneak attack that the Jaicro Empire is launching. Even thought he Aloha Oe gets totally scrapped, the team make it to Dandy in one piece, only to have a lot of bad stuff go down: exposition, betrayals, weapons that could destroy the universe, and the universe ultimately being destroyed. Go out with a bang, as they say…
  • It was nice to finally see Dr. Gel do something right for once when he offered to let Dandy use his spaceship to stop the super weapon that would no doubt destroy the universe… and it ultimately did. So Dandy failed, but did we expect anything less?

No, it’s too late for you to develop a character!

  • A nice, albeit very random, twist to the series is that Bea (you know, Dr. Gel’s right hand man?) is revealed to be a Jaicro Empire spy, which was pretty cool. What wasn’t cool about this situation, though, is that he adhered to the archetype of “the spy who betrays everyone for personal gain”. I’m sick of that, but at least it only takes up a small portion of the episode.
  • The best part, hands down, was when Dandy almost became a god. Yes! Deep down, I knew something like this would happen! It’s even better when he refuses the position because if he became a god, he wouldn’t get to go to Boobies. So Boobies eventually did play a key role in the development of the series! Who would have guessed?
  • But the most amazing aspect of this episode… is that we finally get to understand why Dr. Gel has been perusing Dandy for so long! It’s because his body possessed a high amount of Pyonium, an element that was explained on last week’s episode to be the “god particle”, which allows for easy access to different parts of the universe, sort of like convenient, controllable wormholes.
  • The ending really threw me off, though. When the narrator (who turns out to be God. Go figure) tells Dandy that the amount of Pyonium in his body allowed for him to easily travel through different dimensions, it made me think that every singe episode of Space Dandy took place using the same Dandy, but in different universes. But then that would directly contradict the episode where Dandy met his alternate universe selves… why am I looking into this? It just seems like a cheesy, last-minute explanation as to why there was no continuity. That isn’t bad, it’s nice that they addressed it, but I think it would have been funnier if they never addressed it.

He-Man is going to be pissed

  • “Never-ending Dandy, Baby” seems to be a fitting end to Space Dandy. In some respects, it was the perfect way to wrap up the series. In other respects, it seemed to be an easy out for a show that has no real central plot. Whichever way you decide to look at it, I’ll be in the camp of people who thought it was a great way to end the series. Hopefully the Space Dandy saga doesn’t end here. It would be very easy to make new episodes because the series has no central plot. Hell, the option of making a Space Dandy film or two doesn’t even sound too bad. I don’t think the Space Dandy run is going to end here, so I’ll be patiently waiting until the complex and wacky universe of Space Dandy decides to grace us with its presence again.
