Notes of Space Dandy Season 2 Episode 12

Dandy obviously should’ve tried the black market, then

Last time on Space Dandy Season 2, Dandy’s old 4-dimensional girlfriend shows up, and they try to sent a 2-dimensional universe back to its origin.

Summary of Space Dandy Season 2 Episode 12

  • Dandy’s on trial as it’s shown he’s being accused of murder. After hearing testimonies, it appears that Dandy killed a rare alien with a baseball. It’s then revealed that the baseball belonged to a kid on a planet far away from where the murder took place. It’s then revealed that the man who was murdered had a wife who worked at Boobies, and he had a 50 million woolong life insurance policy. The jury adjourns to deliberate, and they discover that the kid who owned the baseball posted many death threats on social media. It’s revealed, then, that through the help of the “god particle”, the baseball propelled itself through space and time and hit the rare alien on the head, who is then revealed to be alive. Dandy then wakes up, having slept through the entirety of his court case.

My Take

  • It’s about time that Dandy went to court for some reason. Too bad he was on trial, because I would have loved to see him be a juror. All I thought throughout the episode was, “They should spoof 12 Angry Men, but only have Dandy be one of the jurors who, through his idiocy, prove a man’s innocence.” That obviously wasn’t the case, but what we got was good enough.

QT’s actually proven to be more useful than R2D2 ever was, though…

  • The fact that Dandy was being accused of murder is pretty funny. The man’s too incompetent to catch aliens, so the idea of him actually committing a murder, either accidentally or intentionally, doesn’t seem too farfetched. I mean, sometimes Dandy does seem to overextend himself in some inappropriate situations, right? As a setup, this one works pretty well, but the execution was a little less well done that I would have hoped.
  • One aspect that I thought was interesting was how near the middle of the episode, the two lawyers on each side sort of decided to work together to help bring out the truth. In that sense, this seemed more like a mystery, which is definitely okay with me. All of the evidence was presented in the way a mystery would have done so, as well.
  • The case was actually kind of interesting, and it involved elements of sci-fi, which I thought were pretty neat. I loved how evidence kept on getting compounded adding new, complex layers to the case. At first, it was about finding a kid who owned the baseball, then it was about accusing the wife of the murdered man because of a large life insurance policy, then it was about explaining the complexities of the so-called “god particle”… and it all turned out to be an accident involving the kid who owned the baseball who tried to kill his friend… then it turned out the murdered man wasn’t murdered at all.

Uh oh, looks like “Space postman” has been drunk Tweeting again

  • In the end, it just seemed a little rushed, both in content and appearance. It felt as if this were a more “normal” show, the idea of a court case like this would have been fleshed out into two or more episodes. However, the entire case from beginning to end is crammed in this short amount of time here, so it didn’t have any time to fully immerse me in the situation, which was a bummer. Regarding the appearance, we should be used to the strange deviations in animation by now, and I think I’ve adjusted, but this episode was a little bit distracting in those terms. At least there weren’t a lot of static scenes, though, so that made it much more tolerable.
  • I actually liked the fact that Dandy didn’t say anything until the end, and when he finally did say something, it was only two lines: “That was a nice nap”, and “Huh?’ This was because he was asleep the entire time. The best part about this is how it’s never explained why he’s asleep, or if he even knows why he’s on trial.
  • And then the end actually meant to tie in with the last episode! Holy crap, continuity!

The animation budget seems to have run out again

  • “Dandy’s Day in Court, Baby” was pretty good. Sure, it’s not a serious legal drama, but it was pretty nice to see it attempted and given the Space Dandy spin. It’s not the best episode, but it’s a fun addition.
  • But… next week is the last episode of Space Dandy… and I don’t know quite how to feel about it. We’ll just have to wait and see how everything wraps up!
