Kakeru invites Touko and her family for lunch, Yukinari and Yanagi start to spend more time with each other as step-siblings, and Sachi apologises to Hiro after she put him in an awkward position when she confessed in Episode 9. But later on, at the Okikura home, Kakeru tells Touko that he might leave town to tour the world with his piano-playing mother.
Summary of Glasslip Episode 12
- The town where the gang-of-five normally live in has now become a snow-covered one, Touko’s family have only just moved there, and Kakeru is a member of the group (where Touko originally was). After some pleasantries and introductions, Kakeru invites Touko to view the fireworks display, only for Touko to discover that Yukinari, Yanagi, Sachi and Hiro have already forgotten her. Touko then realises this place is imaginary and thus she returns to the events of Episode 11.
My take
- I love flashback episodes, but only when they do them right. But this was not a flashback episode. Instead it was a “kind-of-flashback-only-not-where-everything-turns-out-to-be-imaginary’ episode. Pointless? Possibly. Filler? Absolutely! For this penultimate episode you’d think something devastating would happen, but nope……wait, what!?!? This show’s going to end!?!? Yup. Afraid so. *sarcasm*
- But here? Where can I possibly begin? I was thrown back a little from the beginning, when Touko arrived on the train into town to move there. I was just thinking it’s was like these snowy scenes she kept on seeing in past episodes were just something that happened long ago…then you-know-who accidentally bumps into her. I knew straight away; filler episode time.
Don’t do it, Touko. He’s a P.A Works character. He’ll destroy you.
- All I could picture in this episode was an imaginary world constructed by Touko as if she pictured Kakeru the way she really wanted to; just some hunky normal guy (as opposed to the philosophical robot he is). But by doing that, she sees that doing that would mean separating herself from the others entirely…as so eloquently shown at the end. So by looking at from that sense, this does give Touko an ultimatum of sorts: ditch Kakeru and keep her friends, or elope with Kakeru and let your friends ditch you.
- A notion that was brought up right from Episode 1, the moment Kakeru stepped into that tiny little cafe (you’d think a big town like that would have a few family restaurants or something…). Touko’s friends took an immediate dislike to him. So in this episode, were the roles reversed? No, but it was clear that Yukinari, Yanagi, Sachi and Hiro could only have Touko or Kakeru in their lives, and not both. But if this is the ‘imaginary world’ Touko eventually sees it as, are we as the viewer supposed to think that the ‘Touko or Kakeru’ idea is true, or merely some waking dream that Touko has at Kakeru’s house? We can only wait and see.
My BFFs, or the guy they hate? Who do I choose?
- So 2 episodes in a row that I didn’t entirely like. And both of them fillers too. There would be no point in me dropping this. I want to know what happens, but at the same time I don’t…it’s as if I’ve stopped caring about any of them. I should know better and watch less slice-of-life shows, and watch some other genres. So would I see this as a kind of wake-up call; to lay off the samey slice-of-life shows. Next time I’ll do something….different.
