No Tomorrow (Pilot)

Posted on the 06 October 2016 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

Starring: Tori Anderson, Joshua Sasse, George Basil, Jesse Rath, Amy Pietz, Sarayu Blue

Plot: Evie (Anderson) is working a boring job for a boss she hates. A chance encounter with hot, dreamy Xavier (Sasse) seems like a good idea at first, but when Xavier reveals that he believes the world is going to end in eight months, and he’s been checking things off his bucket list. He wants her to join in, she’s skeptical. Hilarity ensues.

What Works: The CW has become the home for girl powered dramedys and superhero shows. This is a show that pairs better with Jane The Virgin or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. For some reason, its paired with The Flash. That being said, I think Joshua Sasse is charismatic enough to carry this show if needed, but the reality is, he’s probably better off on another show.

What Doesn’t Work: I don’t think Tori Anderson is nearly as good of a lead as either Gina Rodriguez or Rachel Bloom. The CW casting directors missed the mark here. The premise doesn’t seem long term. Eight months? That’s season one. What happens in season two when the world hasn’t ended? Then the show loses its quirky presence and becomes something else. It’s a little like how Sleepy Hollow fans are worried what is about to become of their beloved show. Most shows don’t survive radical transformations, and this show is planning one for next season apparently. I could be wrong, but I think this show is headed for a plot shift. It’s a fluff show. There are just better new shows this fall, and better shows on The CW’s lineup.

Final Word: I don’t think this show will stand long term, even if The CW loves to pick up almost every single show it has. I didn’t like it enough to want more, nor do I hate it enough to try and stop someone from watching it. It’s a mediocre show. It might be someone’s thing, but its not mine.

FINAL GRADE: C+
